Hi,

I've looked around but can't seem to find a good dipstick to use to measure the engine oil with a dipstick. Any recommendations please?

Thanks

@Petrol Pete Legend. Thank you very much!
You are welcome , but be aware they do not work like 'normal' dipsticks. they have graduated marks on them in MM as they are designed to be used on different cars. some internet searches will find out what to do. Some people cut it off to suit their one car and leave it in the dipstick tube.

Yeah I come across this video where the fella (Who I believe is a resident in the club) mentioned it should show 150mm to 175mm after a run.

I tried it out when cold as saw 100mm on the dipstick. I will try again after a run but still 100mm is far too low. Don't know where the oil is going. Have added near 4 litres in less the 1000 miles. I see a puff of blue smoke on start up and mate noticed some when I put my foot down. Any ideas? Going to get level sensor changed at some point but have had rocker covers gasket changed, rear main seal and new oil cap. Anywhere else it can leak from?

That’s a lot of oil. You need to make sure you’re not overfilling. I’d change it. Completely empty the oil and then put in the correct quantity. Check it with the dipstick cold and then you know where it should be on the dipstick.

sounds like you’re burning oil but like I said it’s a lot - have you checked the colour of the plugs?

Flip knows. Its a bladdy nightmare this car is. After all the work gone into it and the cost, still treating me bad. I changed the plugs just over 1k miles ago. heres pics of how they looked before:

Also, yeah its on the to do list. Drain out and have sensor changed and see how it goes from there. Hoping its not head gasket or valve stem seals. Big Jobs

Mmmm, I’d have a look at the state of your plugs again. They look like you’re burning oil in the other thread. They should be dry. All mine were like this, slightly brown:

There is no way your car is leaking that amount of oil , you would know about it , trust me I had a major leak in the middle of the V on my M113 , It would leave a pool on the floor at every stop and after driving off the motorway smoke would billow from underneath the car like something from a drift video. even then it did not use as much as yours is using , it is almost certainly being burnt. Here is a bit of the story.

Yeah its a strange one as there isn’t much smoke. Only on start up a slight puff of blue smoke. And apparently when I floor it it smokes a but but doesn’t leave a trail or anything. Im thinking dodgy sensor but just noticed oil leaking i believe from the breather cover. Not rocker but the one attached to it.

But what would oil on spark plug indicate?

if the plug is black and wet it indicates burning oil. They should be light brown and dry.

the oil leak could an indication of too much crank case pressure.

you need to get it check out, compression tests etc

Did you ever get to the bottom of this OP??

So cylinder 3 & 8 came up low. Don’t remember exact reason but looking to be the piston rings failing as the most probable cause. Thankfully the bores weren’t damaged too much so was reusable. Other a new block would be needed as you cant rebore these or sleeve them. Mileage was around 146K. So whenever someone is looking for a 55 car I alway mention this as apparently despite numbers being low it’s starting to come about more often. Most likely down to poor maintenance. Mines turned out to be an absolute lemon so….
