Securing Mac OS X

Have a look about a third of the way down the page. Hopefully this covers what you need, not tried it so can't vouch for I'm afraid.

IIRC you cannot encrypt the entire hard drive under OsX without third party tools.

If you turn on encryption on your account (Apple>System Preferences>Security>Filevault) it'll encrypt your home folder though.

PGP Whole Disk or PointSec Full Disk Encryption
You need to get the most recent versions though for snow leopard support.

Pointless encrypting the whole drive. Encrypt your files using FileVault - that's exactly what it's there for

Except that any forensic analyst worth their salt will check temporary files, program cache's and everything else first... thus making filevault about as useful as a packet of crisps...

I keep all my important stuff on external drives rather than on the machine itself .

None of my stuff is sensitive/confidential so my main worry would be loss of my data rather than it falling into the wrong hands .

Contacts/calendars/emails etc are backed up on MobileMe .

Wouldn't it make more sense to save it on BOTH...

The OP was talking about theft - I don't think forensic analyst steal computers

If he needs to worry about forensic analysts I don't think he'll be posting questions on a Mercedes forum
