Just to put a tick in the box, I wouldn't mind checking/cleaning the MAF. However, rather than being nice and accessible at the front of the engine like most MAF sensors, it's right at the back under the air cleaner assy on the CLK 55!

Has anyone done this job on the V8 (I'm assuming the CLK 430 is the same)? At 55k miles with the car running fine, is it likely to be worth doing, or a case of it it ain't broke don't fix it? At the end of the day, if it had been a '5 minute job', I would've done it, but it it's going to take a few hours, it's probably not worth the hassle. What do you think?

Cheers,
Ian.

Its under the air cleaner on the C43 also, but this just unclips and lifts off, and the maf sensor isn't screwed to the car either. I did mine in 30 minutes.

It can be done in 5 mins - the whole vanity cover literally just pulls off and is connected directly to the MAF sensor - this then just unclips and has one plug to it.

Cool, so the air cleaner assy just lifts right off? I'll have a go tonight when I get home.

Cheers,
Ian.

I don't think your AMG cover is much different, but once you've removed the intake hoses then it should just pull off. Mind your fingers though as the edges can be sharp and I sliced my finger once.

Tried taking the MAF off this evening and, although I could get to it fine (by pulling off the air cleaner housing), I wasn't able to remove the MAF. Firstly, the MAF unit itself appears to be in 2 or 3 parts. Secondly, there's a metal clip between the bulkhead and the MAF that appears to secure the MAF to the plastic elbow pipe underneath. I tried to unclip this, but it was particularly subborn and I didn't want to force it. Also, it wasn't entirely clear if the clip should be unclipped from the top or the bottom. It looks like the top, but just want to be sure.

So, question is, do I just lever this clip off with the aid of a screwdriver? Does the MAF then just pull off the plastic elbow pipe underneath?

Also, what's the recommended change interval for the air filters?

Cheers,
Ian.

All the info should be in the Service book that came with your car.

Is this what your MAF (116) looks like?

No, it's mounted vertically at the back where 107/125 is and there's a plastic 'egg crate' grille protecting the sensor wires.

Cheers,
Ian.

Just undo the 2 torx screws and full the sensor out and change/clean that.
If you dont have torx use small locking pliers and use 2 self tappers of same size to replace.

I don't remember seeing any Torx screws... just a metal clip between the body of the MAF and the bulkhead. Anyone got an exploded diagram?

Cheers,
Ian.

Sorry - 116 also sits on 125 at the rear of the engine- the diagram shows different setups. The Torx screws are security ones holding the sensor in the MAF itself. The MAF should just unclip.

Ok, so I don't need to unscrew any Torx screws? Just need to prise off the metal clip and pull the MAF off? What's the best way to prise that clip off? Screwdriver between MAF and clip and lever it off?

Cheers,
Ian.

The clip on mine (125) is a sort of twist lock band that goes around the unit - that just came apart with a screwdriver. You can try and clean the MAF by taking it apart but this usually doesn't last very long.

On the C43 the MAF housing just unclips. I just used a screwdriver.

To get at the MAF itself, this unscrews with 2 security TORX bolts, which you can undo with a pair of grips if needed.

The MAF sensor then pulls out of the housing

I work in the car parts industry and the latest update catalogue from Intermotor arrived this week with a section on MAF sensors.

All the Mercedes models listed (over 2 pages) which includes C36 / C43 / C55, have a commonised MAF sensor, Intermotor part 19609. This part will be available from November 2006. It will work out at roughly £ 50 once postage is factored in. In addition part number 19699 is the appropriate TORX drive priced at £ 0.99

You then remove the sensor itself from your housing and fit the new sensor in its place.

Unlike many pattern part MAFs, this uses a platinum element like the original should, rather than cheaper tungsten alloys.

Andrew, do you know if a sensor be available for the SLK230?

Thanks BAzzle

Bazzle - SLK 320 March 2000 to April 2004 is listed. Part 19609, availability as per my previous post - ie November this year onwards.
