The MAF is used to monitor injested air mass and the fueling is adjusted appropriately.

When the MAF gets old and fails to give full output, the engine power goes down as well.

As far as economy goes, I wouldn't expect much difference unless engine torque becomes compromised enough to keep the gearbox in lower gears for longer.
