I'm considering getting a G220 V2 cruise control model, but there is a little voice at the back of my head saying do you really need it?.

I do like to have my car looking mint. I thought I was a bit OCD and obsessive about cleaning and waxing, but then I saw the detailing forums and realised that a) I'm not as bad as I thought, and b) I'm not alone!

My car has done 10k from new and barely seen rain and has been off road every winter so the paint is good and does not need "correction". (its got the nano ceramic clearcoat I believe).

I progressed from autoglym years ago, tiring of the chalky residue etc. I used Maguiars Gold Class, the results of which garnered lots of praise and compliments from onlookers. Now I have switched to Maguiars. ultimate liquid wax.

Sometimes in full on bright direct sun I can see streaking on the vertical panels where the wax has been applied by hand. With the new ultimate wax I find it hard not put to much product on the car which leaves shadows which have to be removed by further washing

I expect that I will use the machine to apply wax and perhaps occasionally to apply paint cleaner before hand. so will need only 1 or 2 buffers. Will the machine be any good for the fiddly bits, i.e. around the front spoiler/fogs etc.

Will I be wasting my money or will it give me worthwhile improved results when waxing. What do you think, cheers

I regularly use the G220 but we also have a DAS 6 Pro and DAS 6. These are every bit as good as the G220 for home or occasional use so if you fancy a cheaper alternative then this is where we get our paint correction kit from.

My view would be a G220 would be an expensive luxury but the DAS RA polishers would be a nice to have and useful

Thanks for that. It's much more affordable, but I'm worried about using a pro tool and damaging my paint, That was the USP of the G220.

The DAS polishers are less aggressive than the G220 the DAS 6 (not the pro version) is much easier to use than the G220 but just takes a little longer. A lot of pro's use the G220 as well as it really is a top class machine but it's cost makes it a little prohibitive for DIY use IMHO

I have a G220 and really like it. Like you I hesitated about spending that much when the car was pretty much immaculate already.

Its been really useful for removing scratches and any swirl marks. I think they are well worth getting as you never know when you may pickup a scratch you want to remove.

if you want a cheepie buy a macallister orbital sander from b and q i bought one got some pads from ebay and to be honest its a great bit of kit i bought a bottle of expert 1000 polish the same polish can be used for correction and polishing you just use different pads

I did the same, only a black and decker orbital sander. It cost 40 quid, has "soft start" and 8 speed settings. I've often wondered why DA polishers cost 4 to 5 times what orbital sanders cost. For a professional that uses it every day, a heavy duty motor etc makes sense, but the meguiars version seems to be a £120 handle screwed to a £50 sander. It can't be long before they come down in price rapidly.

Pro's only use d.a's for glazing or maybe on some 'sticky' paint, such as Porsche. Rotary's are the weapon of choice:)

I would say if you're getting chalk/dust from any Polish than you're using way too much.
With regard to getting a Rotary, look t getting the kestrel. No where near the price of the 220 but (in my opinion) every bit as good. I think you only start noticing big differences when you start looking at machines by Festool etc.
They really are in a different league.

True. Unless using the Meguiars microfibre system.

Yes, some and a mean a couple love it such as Todd Cooperider. It just doesn't work officiaintly enough for me. If you have unlimited time on a Lamborghini it's great but otherwise rotary works so much better for me.

A sander has a small "throw" (oscillation) of a couple of mm, a DA's throw is about 8mm, thus more efficeint at it's job, doesn't account for the big price differencial though.

I disagree, a smaller throw will make it more efficient, in the same way a rotary with 0 throw is more efficient. The larger throw is ensure that it's as safe (In terms of burn through and marring) as possible by minimising the time the pad is in contact with a single area.

For the record, I'm not saying the meguiars DA range are bad products, I'm sure they do the job they are intended for, just that they're way over priced for what they are.

I'm sure power tool makers like Makita, bosch, Black and Decker etc will cotton on eventually and start selling their own versions for less than half the price of the meguiars branded machines. They already sell rotary machines to the trade, so I would imagine DA machines for retail can't be far away.

Meg's don't make their own machines, so I wonder who does?

Removal of minor scratches would be a bonus in the future. The main reason I'm considering one is to obtain a better finish than I can achieve by hand, so its good to hear from owners.

I think I'm going to get one but may go for the less expensive DAS 6 one as it seems to do the same job without fear of damaging the paint.

Here's a link to my thread after using the DAS 6 Designo - as far as i'm concerned you'll never get results like that by hand. I was amazed by the results and almost a year on the paintwork in still super smooth, although i do ensure that's she's cleaned every 2 weeks:

Thanks for the advice. After several recommends for the Kestrel DAS 6 I've taken the plunge and ordered one. I've also ordered a Meguiars yellow polsihing pad and some Soft buff finishing pads.

I intend to use Meguiars Ultimate Polish (only when required) and Ultimate wax. Going to put a coat of Megs Gold class wax on the wifes B class first to get the hang of it first.

BTW your CE looks cracking!
