The first problem has occured on the ML and I'm not sure if it is serious.
I started noticing a funny bearing sort of sound as I slowed down last week and thought nothing of it. Then yesterday I was showing a freind how smooth it revs and when the revs fall, between about 2500 and 1000, it makes a sort of grumbling vibrating noise, like bearings rubbings. We opened up the bonnet and oil is all over the drivers side of the engine bay. I checked the engine oil and it's fine so I took it to MB's and they said the viscous fan coupling is what is making the noise and it may well be where the oil has originated from.
Sounds feasible until I looked today and noticed that the fan is a plain electric one and does not appear to be of a viscous coupling type.
It's booked in for monday but could anyone shed any light on what they think the problem may be.

Hi

Just checked the EPC and could find no reference to a viscous fan on you engine either.

Does the ML have the one way slip ring pulley on the alternator that de couples it when the revs drop off, it must be that with luck.

Hi Marcos,
I am so sorry to read about this incident. I hope members are aware that this is the new V6 320CDI. Any oil leakage is not good. I cannot help with the diagnosis, but is this oil dripping onto your garage floor or driveway? I would be more than a little displeased and I would very politely let the dealer know of my disappointment.

Little oil leaks can very soon turn into big oil 'dumps'! :o ;) If this is an oil leak then the dealer should be giving you a suitable courtesy vehicle whilst this issue is resolved.

Is there any chance this might simply be excess 'gunk' that is getting blown off the engine? I say this because when we first took delivery of our stretched limo, my wife thought that had an oil leak, but it was simply this 'gunk'? (please forgive the technical term)

Good luck for Monday and make sure they are aware of any oil that has dripped onto your driveway\garage.

Regards,
John

Marcos I wonder if the problem is a leaking air intake so breather oil is blown out under pressure.

Could be, but what is making the horrible noise:confused: After looking again today the noise seems to be from the front offside of the engine.

Just got a call from the garage.
Apparently it is a cracked oil intercooler pipe that is spraying oil and as it sucks air in it is causing the noise.
The part is on order form Germany, always is isn't it, so it should be sorted by the end of the week.

Does this sound feasable.

It would certainly account for the oil. I don't see how it can suck air as the oil is always under pressure but just see how it goes.

I agree with Dieselman about the air. The noise might be generated by the oil being forced out through the crack in the pipe, particularly if the crack is small.

Just a quick update.
The car went in today and they changed the intercooler pipe and cleaned the engine bay. Trouble was the noise was still there when I went to pick it up.
Luckily one of the mechanics, Joe, really good bloke came out and had a listen and said straight away " alternator " he then got a colleague to listen and he said the same.
It's now got an alternator on order:rolleyes:
