Has anyone used Oils and Lubricants Limited of halifax for Shell helix ultra 5W-40, or can anyone suggest good supplier without having to apply for another mortgage.

Regards,

John

GSF are very competative on Oils or you could try Opie Oils, think he's a member on here and there are several posts regarding the subject if you do a search.

The usual suggestion for 229.5 is to use Costco and get Mobil 1.

ISTR £22.50 + VAT for 4 litres.

Have a search around....Costco or Makro often have an offer.

Spec also met by Mobil 1 0W-40 and Castrol EDGE 0W-30 in the big brands.

Halfords (amazingly) have a "20% off" promo on Mobil with 5L of the above for £38.39.

I was in Costco last week and got the Mobil 1 for £19 plus vat. That is seriously cheap for this stuff !

"£23 including VAT last time I was there"

Confirmed from my last purchase of Mobil 1 there too. I also bought a twin pack of Magnatec there for a very low price.

If you aren't a Costco member and don't have a friend who can help, don't forget: Kwik-Fit do a fixed-price deal on Mobil 1 and Mobil semi-synth and mineral oils. It includes their own filter -- a dubious benefit, but they are very reluctant to accept any filter you give them, because of their corporate liabilities -- and can work out very cost effective, especially for 6L sumps and larger. As ever, watch them like a hawk when they do the job, so you can intervene if necessary (as I had to do when they mistook the autobox for the sump). Last time I checked, their price on Mobil 1 was around £40. If you don't like the thought of a Kwik-Fit filter fitted by a Kwik-Fit fitter (f-ing what?) spoiling the integrity of your MB, then just swap it afterwards for a genuine MB one (MB dealer price not so much more than other sources as to be worth worrying about).

There are 3 different Mobil 1 grades sold in the UK, only the 0W-40 has 229.5 on the list of approvals (don't buy the 0W-30 "fuel economy" grade by mistake).

There is also 5W-30 ESP version that meets 229.51 meant for diesel cars with DPF -don't know what your car is so this may or may not be OK.

Thanks everyone. Costco is the obvious way but unable to obtain membership!

What about a fleece oil filter - MB still listing paper filter for my 2004 W211 320CDI

Try a PM to member MikeVervon -he was selling some a little while back. I bought some and it's good stuff and a good price!

Kwick fit do the E300TD with mobil 1 and filter included for 49 pounds, this is 7.5 litres of oil in there. Check what Mobil 1 they are using as W124coupe suggested they are different kind?

Roger, If one wants to use the higher speck 229.5 oil there is no point in putting a MB paper element filter in as it will not go the distance!

I understood the fleece filter was an MB filter for long life usage - not some spurious aftermarket menace. Am I right to think that?

Fleece filter

I am looking for a part number for a fleece filter for my W211. EPC only lists the paper one!

Which engine and year?

I have the V6 diesel from 06 and the same filter is used by Merc for long (20,000 Km) or short (15,000Km) interval (both varied a bit by Assyst) - only the oil spec is different - .5 (or .51) versus .3 (or .31).

This assumes Assyst intervals not fixed intervals like the later cars can have.

It under £10 for the Merc filter so hardly worth going elsewhere.

I recently got mobil 1 - 0/40W inclusive delivery - 10 litre oil for £65. Not bad, since 8 litre oil was costing me £80+ from halfords and the stealers were charging me £15 p/litre for it.
