r class
What's the general view on the reliability of the electrics in mercs? I got a r class in feb this year. Since then the command unit has been giving me bother. The rear parking sensors have failed and today the central locking is not working. The father in law spent 45k on a shinny new ml and he has been back and forward to dealer with faulty central locking which they don't seem able to fix. Had a bmw x3 prior to the r class and not a bit of bother with it. Don't get me wrong I love the R class exactly what I needed.

The R and M class are built in Vance Alabama USA if that's relevant and the R class ceased production in 2012/13. Modern Mercedes are extremely complex electronically but built of relatively cheap [ to the manufacturer not the customer:eek: ] components. In many cases due to complexity repair is by replacement of complete modules which have to be coded to the rest of the car. Digital electronics are not particularly robust to damp, condensation and voltage spikes- the very conditions often found in automobiles! Cars appeared to have peaked in reliability in the 90's but now due to consumer demand [ we do like our toys] and the demands of enviromental legislation appear to be on a downward path Repair/ Reliability wise due to increasingly complex electronics. PS these issues are not unique to Mercedes
