Hi am a new user. I have a 2005 facelift c220 coupe. Do i have to use merc only tyres on both front and rear or can i use any, or even mix makes ? 225x45x17 front and 245x40x17 rear.
Thanks

I've used MO tyres before, did not notice the slightest difference over ordinary versions. It is always better to use the same tyres but isn't compulsory, your choice.

When I replaced all 4 of mine I asked the question of the fitting centre, the reply was 'no' the only difference is usually a slight variation to the tread pattern. I went for the non MO - the standard fitting.

I heard MO tyres have stiffer sidewalls due to the way the front wheels turn on a MB.

Sounded like cobblers to me. Snake oil.

'MO' labelled tyres are constructed no differently from the same tyre without the label. Where they do differ is in the quality of the tyre. By that I mean when tyres are manufactured they all undergo QA testing and those tyres that most closely match the 'ideal' are labelled MO (or perhaps more correctly, those that match the MB tighter spec). They have the least imbalance/run-out/low or high spots. Check the colour banding on the new tyres, my recent MO labelled Pirelli tyres had the bands very central

Thanks everyone for your opinions . The tyre fitter i spoke to said it could effect your insurance if you have an accident because it may make a difference to the abs or traction control .
Hmmm not sure .

If you change tyre size, you need to:

A. Use only those sizes listed in the car's manual as suitable for you car, and there would usually be various options to choose from.

B. Remember that use of different size tyres may require use of different size wheels - again, the car's manual will tell you which wheel size goes with each tyre size.

C. Always notify your insurer about any changes to the tyre size.

If you adhere to the above, you should have no issues with neither the car's safety systems nor with your insurance.

As for Mercedes Original (MO) tyres, both MB and the tyre manufacturers say if is recommended to use them, but it is not mandatory.

Your car will be perfectly safe, 100% legal, and fully insured, if you use the correct size tyres and wheels regardless of whether they are MO or not.

My experience with buying MO tyres is that the colour markings were not only reasonably close to the centre of the wheel but also that they were absolutely identical even when the tyres came from different batches and had different manufacturing dates.

Obviously I did not buy dozens of tyres so my experience may be down to pure coincidence, however it does support the theory that MO tyres have more stringent specifications compared to non-MO tyres.

Also the imbalance/run out spots varies between manufacture and a softer sidewall tyre is more likely to encounter imbalance problems. .

MO is purely a size difference on the outer edges of the tyre to prevent scrubbing of the arches on Mercs. Nothing to do with the quality or tread.

With regards staggered wheels... again as long as staggered wheels are an option listed in your car's manual there should be no issue in fitting them. Just make sure the sizes of the tyres and wheels are listed in the manual, and inform your insurer.

Please supply supporting documentation.

There is no dimensional difference in MO labelled tyres. This would require a completely separate production run specifically for MO tyres. This would incur massive cost and therefore price implications. I have never found any price difference (from the same supplier) between MO and non-MO tyres.

It is perfectly possible and acceptable to fit non-MO tyres to Mercs (in fact my dealer has supplied and fitted non-MO tyres to my car in the past). This would suggest there is no clearance issues or implications...

Also, MO tyres are the same for all Merc models. I.e. a certain size MO tyre is the same whether fitted to a B-Class, a C-Class, and an E-Class, over different production years... These models all have different characteristics and differently-shaped wheel arches so it is highly unlikely that a single MO tyre happens to be fine-tuned to meet the specific requirements of all these different cars at the same time.

The difference - if one exists - would be found in a generic feature of the tyre, not in its suitability for this model of Merc or the other.

Agreed, my MB dealer fits Federal tyres to the courtesy cars, that shows how important MO tyres are to them.

The MO only means the tyre is approved by Mercedes, it has no structural difference from non approved like for like makes of tyre. For example a WangLee tyre will not be approved so not carry to MO marking but you can fit them if you want.
