Im thinking of maybe changing the Merc (210 200 kompressor) for a Xtype Jag . Has anyone here have or had one of these . The jag is a 2.0 desiel . The reason im thinking of changing is for better fuel milage . I would like to get another E class , a 211 , but I dont want to pay the higher road tax connected with 2.2 , 2.7 and 3.2 engines , this is why im thinking of the Jag .

Cue tumbleweed blowing past the forum

(I actually quite like the current facelifted X-Type, but know that there's nothing special about the underpinnings)

I've heard that BMW 3-series engines offer great performance v CO2.

My wife hates BMW and im not too keen on them either so there not really an option

Diesel auto is a great drive, quite nippy and as with a jag the ride and seats are comfortable.

Theyve been around for a few years now so any problems with them should have been sorted.

For what you pay for them they are pretty good cars

If you're into saving money then why buy the Jag? Buy the Mondeo....a nice car.

A 203 C class would be better, or to bite the bullet and get the 211. Its a far superior car to the mondeo (old one) derived X type. BMWs do tick the CO2/performance box nicely, but what about a VAG product. Passat, A4, Skoka superb all nice cars too :)

Ashamed to say i was in a team that was involved in the building/ designing of the doors for the LHD american market ( hides his face in shame):o:o back in 01

The additional tax isn't a significant annual cost compared with depreciation, servicing, and fuel unless you're buying at the bottom end of the used market (where your depreciation will effectively be capped).

The only reason IMHO for going for the X-Type is if you want a 4wd saloon or estate.

Hello

My brother did 100k in a 2.0d sport estate and it had its fair share of problems...

However he now has a saloon (2.0d) and on 90K all seems good with this one.

I like the look of the estate though, the sports also have some quite nice spec. Brother gets over 40mpg (manual) and it goes well.

So its a Mundao underneath? I'd rather have the jag thanks.

Hi

Shorty is in the Republic of Ireland where the car tax is based on engine size i think, and has been for years. Although in the last year these have been supplemented with emissions on new cars. See here Car Tax Rates in Ireland July Changes

Nothing wrong with an X Type Jaguar, though it is 'just' a Ford Mondeo underneath the retro looks. If you can live with that there is no reason why you won't enjoy what's essentially a good car.

However, a W211 is in a different league to an X Type. For starters its a size bigger (X Type is more C Class sized) and should offer a much more refined driving experience.

I'm not sure what the tax rates are in Ireland - from memory it's on engine size, but here the few hundred £'s per year 'saved' in road tax is small beer compared to real running costs like servicing and maintenance, not forgetting depreciation.

If I were you I'd also look at BMW 3 and 5 Series (obviously I'm a BMW fan :)).

Take a look at the latest B6 VW Passat estate 1.9 litre diesel. Elegant in the right colour, German build quality, capable of mega miles plenty room in the back, and lots of choice. Only thing to watch is that pesky electronic handbrake, but the latest ones have a hill holder- automatic-release function.

Thanks for the replys lads . The road tax differance is between 150 euro to 900 euro for the bigger merc engines . Im wating for a call back from the dealer about the car so i might take a test drive this week . I always liked the Jag XJ cars and reckon that I should at least try out the X type as tne XJ would be out of my league as reguards running cost .
