hello every1, this is my first post at mbclub forum.
i have e220 cdi with a mb factory installed phone kit. the kit works fine except for that the car doesnot recognize the phone in the cradle:crazy: . when a call comes i am able to attend it through the car audio system and the cd player muted itself. But i cant answer the phone through the steering controls. The instrument cluster displays "function not available" when i press the answer call button on my steering button. can anyone help me solve this problem???/ thanks

Sounds like you have an aftermarket system, rather than a MB system - or alternatively, the instrument cluster needs programming to tell it there is a MB system (but that would have been done at the factory)

When you are receiving a call, does the radio's volume knob change the volume ? If it does not then you have an aftermarket one.

yes it does. the audio system mutes and u can hear the call on the mb system.. im sure the system is mb installed

The muting and the "using the car's speakers" can be achieved on any car (with a relay available from most audio shops that just disconnects the speakers from the radio and connects them to the phone system when needed) - which is why I asked about the volume control - as that would mean the radio is acting as the amplifier - which proves the MB system is installed.

Assuming it is the MB system, then it sounds like the cluster is not programmed to know a telephone is present.

When you cycle through the display items on the cluster, do you get one fo telephone ?

What age is the car (you dont say if its a new E or old E) and does the phone cradle have any markings/labels on it ?

no the cluster dosesnt have the phone option but the steering controls have phone answer buttons(one for acepting call and the other one for rejecting)...as for the model 2002. and yeah when i press the answer call button on the steering wheel. the cluster displays "function not available"?

OK, the cluster is not programmed for the phone system. The steering wheel controls are always there , and they talk to the cluster, which talks to the radio, which talks to the phone if present.

So, one of two things is wrong.
(a) The cluster is not correctly programmed for the phone system (fixable by dealer with Star Diagnosos)
(b) It isnt a MB integrated phone (factory fit phone system) (and thus the cluster is not programmed for the phone)

Cheers

If you go to my www.mercupgrades.com website and look at the "fitting/upgrading phone in ML" document, there are pictures of the various MB cradles that would/could have been fitted to a 2002 Merc. at the factory
