"Relegating once-dominant BMW to the No. 2 rank for the first time in more than a decade, Mercedes is likely to sustain its strong delivery pace in 2017 thanks to a new version of the E-Class sedan rolled out last March."

Luxury or bulk sale king? Luxury IMHO starts with the S class, not the E class taxi (sorry no offence intended)

Given BMW build quality compared to Mercedes Ive never rated BMW above Mercedes in the luxury market. Sure they are better than many but they don't occupy quite the same market space.

I'm offended and

I'm offended and require some type of compensation.

A night with Myleene Klass will do.

I couldn't honestly say the CL is a lot more comfortable than the E55K was - although that says more about how good the E55K is than the CL...

Not saying the E isn't 'good' just that a model that is used as a taxi in many cities just can't be classed as 'luxury'

Maybe more a comment on how MB have raised the bar on 'luxury' ?

I'd have to agree with Post #2 although I'm not familiar with the later W212 E class.
For me , luxury starts and ends with the S class with the MB brand.

Traditionally over the years.... the results in car magazine tests were:

The 3 series beat the C-Class by a mile

The 5 series beat the E-Class by a whisker

The 7 series was miles behind the S-Class

And now the 7er is right behind the S-Class. Plus the benchmark in Luxury set by the new 5er...

Luxury or bulk sale king?

Mercedes said they wanted to double their global sales volume this decade and last time I saw it commented on, they were ahead of their target.

Luxury car king ? For me that is Rolls-Royce. Now, if it's high volume then I guess it's Mercedes, BMW, Audi and, perhaps, in time, Jaguar. M-B and BMW have so many models, it surely dilutes their focus at thee top end, unless they are very canny and use larger amounts of cash from the high volume revenue, to keep pushing the luxury at the top of the line.

Quality IMO is not having to spend $$$$$ in repair costs. A recent report by the Swedish insurance company LF ("Länsförsäkringar") regarding engine failure insurance claims shows that the german car makers VW, Audi, Porsche, BMW is "safely" positioned amongst the worst. The Japs are amongst the best. Then comes Volvo and Mercedes a bit better than average. The difference between Mercedes and the rest of the germans was quite noticable...

(And the sadly missed SAAB was also amongst the best, RIP)

Ever been in Milan ? S Class taxis abound.

Although, saying that Harry has a bloody fast taxi.
