Some colours come and go out of fashion - white for example. Was quite unpopular 5-10 years ago, but it's made a bit of a comeback over the last couple of years and now there's quite a few expensive new MBs being bought in white - AMGs, E-class coupés etc.

There's also quite a few colours that seemed like a good idea at the time, but aren't very desirable today - 'taxi beige' on the old 124s/201s etc. Other colours only appeal to a quite limited number of people - eg red isn't very popular for an MB.

Colours like black and silver are pretty timeless though, and quite safe for resale, which I think is important to quite a few buyers of new cars? :) Silver also has an obvious marque-specific link to Mercedes-Benz from their racing heritage

You are right that some of the more unusual colours from the older days can look quite good at the moment - Bornite, Nutria, Almandine Black etc.

At the end of the day, so long as you're happy with the colour of your car, what difference does it make? :thumb:

To my mind, much of the colour choice is driven by the dealers, who spout the line that 'non-standard' colours make the car harder to sell and reduce its value. It's all twaddle as far as I'm concerned and if I was ordering a new car, I'd order it in the colour that I wanted. However, this twisted perception does rather seem to limit the colour choice in the used market.

Quite right. 'Non-standard' meaning any colour except 'Stepford Silver'.

This is the only way which explains why such a drab colour ever became popular.

When we ordered our SLK in fire opal the dealer tried really hard to persuade us otherwise. Even tried to ask for a bigger deposit in case we changed our minds. We think it looks amazing and ultimately that is what matters.

Green and white are significantly harder to shift in the used market and will be discounted over a more desirable colours

A fewe years ago our local dealers were on a £1000 bonus to whoever managed to sell a c-class coupe in that metallic green/yellow colour (cant remember the official name) that had been on the forecourt for months.

if I was going to the expense of getting a new car, I would definitely pick the colour that I want, and not the colour that has the 'best' resale value.

one of the joys of getting a new car is being able to choose the colour :)

A friend of mine implements the dealer rental operations. A few years ago she wanted to change jobs and went through the whole interview process. In the end she came second and they offered the job to someone else.

In this role you get a new car every three months, sometimes more often if a dealer wants the car. The guy who got offered the job proceeded to order his car in white; convincing the manufacturer concerned to conclude he was incompetent and withdrawing their job offer!

They then offered my friend the job, she only found out months later what had actually happened!

How many different shades of balck are there in the MB range? I can think of the following:
obsidian black, which is deep and glossy black
blue-black, which is a sort of dark grey
green-black, which is a sort of dark blue
melanite-black, which has a green tinge to it
almandine-black, which is a sort of aubergine colour

Never come accross the tropic black mentioned on the list: what does that look like?

Those who've invested in white C63's may live to regret their colour choice then! I'll admit that green is less popular, but why? I've had a couple of green cars (not MB's) and no great disadvantage ever showed itself while I owned them.

I love Green cars - I have had 3x metallic green Audis - lovely cars.

I'd actually like a brand new 911 Carrera in pale green - but I don't know whether I'd have the cojones to actually do it! I'd probably end up speccing metallic black - I'm such a coward.

My E55 is 744 Brilliantsilber - possibly in homage to the great 'silberpfelle' era, or possible with an eye on resale. Looks like I'm not the only coward!

There appears to be quite a bit of confusion here.
The list that dw_124 posts looks like a list of colours available across the whole of the Mercedes range( or the range of colours available over the whole lifetime of the W124 in all markets). When you then get down to colour ranges within model type and body type then it narrows quite considerably. Back in the eighties and early nineties, Mercedes did not really have the range of customisation that they have nowadays and it was difficult, expensive and time consuming to get them to paint a car in a colour that was not part of the model colour range. So for example the 320E cab we were discussing the other day in Nutria could only be ordered in ~20 colours from the factory. Some of the colours are quite frankly awful too so that also explains lack of colours. The same situation existed with other models and also applied to interior trim. In the late nineties Mercedes launched their Designo range but even so it was quite restrictive at first.

I love the subtlety of some MB colours, and used to make the other half laugh if I named a particular colour (you know, in that anorak sympathy kind of way!). In Bristol museum last year, she drew my attention to these displays, and was actually quite inspired from then on!

Malachite being the greens above.

I nearly bought a bornite 124 cab before buying a beryl blue one, and have an azurite blue 124 estate. I find azurite a bit clichéd because of its must have status, but love all three colours, and their ambiguity (well, bornite and beryl anyway).

Going back to the original post of that stunning W124 Saloon in 475 Nutria....

I have recently bought a 1994 C124 Coupe which is in need of bodywork attention, which will undoubtedly end in a repaint. I am thinking either Tourmaline Green, but really fancy Nutria after seeing that photo.

The body shop I use are going to knock up a large sample of Nutria for me because the small sample we have looks nothing like the Nutria I've seen in photos!

In order to get a proper feel for the colour I am desperate to find out what paint code the cladding in the depicted car has? Does anyone know off-hand, or know where I could find that out?

Craig

Wow, nutria is one stunning colour

But I think I couldn't decide, there are just too many good ones ....
Azurite blue, tourmaline green (especially on S124), champagne, nutria, 744, 040 ...

475 Nutria
8482 karminbrown (?) :thumb:

Friend of ours had a 201 in Nutria. It looked really good. From the colour chart no one would ever choose it but it looks so much better in the metal.
I must be in a minority but Tourmaline just does not do it for me. To me Malachite is a much classier green.

Personally I like met. silver...and I think it looks great on all Mercs...and it does have that special link with the brand (kind of like Alfa Red). Personally I like the solid red on quite a few Mercs too.

Many consider green to be an 'unlucky' colour...

I really do not consider myself to be superstitious, but I have owned one green car in my life time (bought against my father's advice - green being an 'unlucky' colour) and in 6 months of ownership it was driven in to twice whilst parked and broken in to - I sold it quickly!
