Mercedes E36 W210-Reverse light issue

Hi,

I currently have an issue where the reverse lights fail to show when reverse gear is selected. My 1997 E36 AMG (W210) runs on a 4sp auto transmission. However, when you slightly notch the gear lever up from reverse selection, the reverse lights show but the lever is not fully in gear. In a nutshell the reverse lights seem to be out of line with the reverse gear selection. Any advise would be much appreciated?
