Mercedes Melt down and a man from the AA

Could be a worn out break pad with faulty sensor. Grinding noise could be the pad housing grinding on the disc

Had this a number of years ago in a Nissan. Your description sounds eerily similar

1. ABS fault visit workshop
2. Service brake defective vist workshop
3. ESP defective visit workshop.

my answer; get a W124 - i get none of these messages on my W124 (or my R107 for that matter), however hard i try. :D

as with others, let it thaw out and see how it goes. my 7 series always complained in icy weather - was fine next day.

Steve

Take the train.

Let the car thaw out - the weekend forecast is good. It might be packed slush/ice around the brakes.

Don't blame the weather unless proven otherwise. There are thousands of E-class taxis working fine in the Nordic countries.

If a wheel nut, you don't have to confess to the forum!

Which reminds me.... the weird noise I was getting from (what I believed) was the n/s front of my 211 turned out (WIM sourced it today) to be the heat shield behind the REAR brake disc just touching the wheel!! A 2 minute fix! Thanks again Tony! :)

(Sorry to hijack Steve, I just remembered it and it could be something others might think worth checking if they ever hear a high pitched whine...)

It cannot be a wheel nut, the car has not been near MB Glasgow for sometime.

It could be a large chunk of ice caught somewhere, I will attempt to drive it tomorrow as its thawing tonight. Hopefully that is what it is, but I fear not given the grinding and the verdicts so far from both forums.

I am somewhat saddened if it is a wheel bearing, its another failure on the car thats happened prematurely. In saying that, its done 15k miles almost in 6 months so its a perfectly usable drivable and usable car for the most part.

What I am worried about is post warranty period, is this particular E320 going to be a money pit, lets face it, its not an AMG or a particularly fancy car, just a nice mid range rapid diesel sports saloon. It should be durable and last well-certainly my E220 did, so much I bought the same car if you like again.

Perhaps crockers is right, the thing is, I would replace it with another 211 sports, maybe a E500 or a V6CDi but a facelift. The issue, I do not have the money to do it.

I happen to like this car. I cannot think of a car that balances cost effectiveness (tyre wear, fuel consumption) with the performance (it goes like stink and in reality I never feel short changed power wise) and also with long distance comfort with nice tidy handling. I was having a natter with my boss in the canteen (who is a car guy) and his verdict is that "you get cars like that, for some unexplained reasons give trouble" you are best getting rid, and getting something else. Part of me says he is right, the other says, its all metal etc, just needs fixing and off I go....

The E320cdi 211 is a cracking car, it just seems that my one seems to have issues, but its all I would replace it with would be the same car, and I would be reluctant to spend £000's on the same car again.

I am also disheartened as I will need to call Mobilo and they will take it to MB Glasgow, of which I personally have no faith in.

Your boss is right I think. Sometimes you just get a 'wrong un' which turns into a money pit. Key is deciding when to move it on. It gets harder to more you spend.

I found this out with our W211 and eventually lost faith, which was why I did not advertise it on here.

It was by far the cheapest 320 sports in the country, age and miles in the equation, and by several grand, and I got a grand and bit off the shed.

So far I personally have spent £500+ on repairs/maintainance. The warranty another £500 and if this is what I suspect the same again!!!

You could always ask Mobilo to take it to Glen Henderson , who are still an MB authorised workshop , but not part of the same group ?

I dumped mine too , 320 as well. Oh dear... i can't see anybody raving about 211's like the 214's at this rate in years to come.:o

Of the two , I think GH has the better reputation , and charges lower prices .

I know it's cold outside, but i'd jack it up & check bearings etc. for excessive play before calling anyone. :)

Tempted, if they arrange a car for me, I will do so, or the grangemouth option (although I suspect snow/driving conditions there are grim and I do not want to "court" risk)

That was a lovely car you had, I remember it, but I remember your tale of the warranty.

IIRC you were about to buy a facelifted 220cdi 211, but went for a 204 instead. I really like my car, and for what I paid for it, for the age it was a steal.

To run an older car, I would need to up my DIY skills, but the older MBs are a cost effective and very charismatic way to travel in a class that admittedly the newer ones do not have.

I cannot yet afford a 212, which is what I really would replace the car with, and I am not at that stage, just got this one, want to enjoy it for a bit longer.

+1 for that !

I've dealt with Glen Henderson for years from when they used to be a franchised dealer in Ayr, when I moved back to Yorkshire I still bought my cars from them service and deals were that good. If you want an authorised MB workshop in Scotland it does not come much better them GH never had a problem or heard a bad word said about them in all the time I have known them.

Wheel bearings are consumable parts and their wear rate is partly associated with how hard you drive the car.

Having said all that, it sounds to me exactly the same as I had on my car (211 320 CDi). It is some link joint in the suspension and it seems that they are a favourite failure item. The rumble started off like a wheel bearing but quickly became very bad indeed. It wasn't an expensive fix - even at the dealers - about £250 for both sides.

Like wheel bearings, I think of all suspension joints as a consumable.

I buy parts from them regularly , and have a couple of friends who use them for service - both speak very highly of them .
