They're getting much cheaper now, but remember, even if you're buying a 2004 car, dynamically it drives like an older car (as well as being an SUV!) these cars hark back to 1998.
True you can't igonore the running costs and dynamically it's no X5 / Cayenne / Range Rover. However they are well built (the post 2001 anyway), are pretty good off road and have great presence / image. True running costs are high, but to be honest that's to be expected with what was a £30k + car when new. These vehicles are very heavy so that's why the eat brakes so quickly.
I think they're a great buy at the moment, find one with the right spec in the right colour combination and you'll be happy.
Worth noting the 7 seat option (aka family pack) is one option that retains value and is worth having. It isn't easy to retrofit properly. You can get the additional seats easily enough but upgrading to ventilated rear windows isn't an easy or cheap task...
Agree 100% percent. Also make sure that you get the lux pack to ensure side airbags and heated seats.
Make sure the rear anti roll bar isn't creaking and that the ball joints aren't worn.
The exhaust can be up to 3k for a full system including cats so make sure its in good nick.
