Guys

Will be taking the R-Class to Le mans this friday, Ferry companies want us to lock the car without the alarm activated to avoid unnecessary noise. Do I I just need to switch off the interior sensor or is there another way around this?

thanks

Paul

It's the tilt/tow-away sensor that needs to be disable. There should be a button in the switch bank to do this. Has a picture of a hook and car on it?

Probably turn off the interior sensor and the tow away sensor. Cant think of any other way to do this. Does anyone know if the alarm sets if you just lock the doors manually with the key?

From the interactive owner's handbook

Interactive Owner's Manual [251]

Deactivating

It is possible to switch off tow-away protection on the on-board computer for the next time the vehicle is locked more.

If you select Tow-away protection in the Vehicle submenu in the "Adjust display when ignition is switched off" function more, the Tow-away protection on Switch off using +/- message appears in the multifunction display.

You can then deactivate or prime tow-away protection by pressing the or button on the multifunction steering wheel.

Press the button on the multifunction steering wheel.
The Tow-away protection off message appears in the multifunction display.
If you press the button, tow-away protection remains primed.

Lock the vehicle with the key or, on vehicles with KEYLESS-GO, with the locking button on the door handle.
Tow-away protection remains deactivated until:
the vehicle is unlocked again and
a door is opened and closed again and
the vehicle is locked again
To prevent a false alarm, deactivate the tow-away protection if you lock your vehicle and it:
is being transported
is being loaded onto a ferry or car transporter, for example
is parked on a movable surface, e.g. in a split-level garage

thanks for the information, much appreciated. I know where to find the tow away protection option is on the menu.

Cheers

I don't know how hand ferrys I have used...a lot...

Never turned the alarm sensors off? never been told to?

Handbrake on yes (or rather foot brake..)

Have a great trip

Just got back from the continent on a ferry and they kept making announcements over tannoy as we boarded to disable car alarms and then a bit later they would call out reg numbers of cars alarming as the seas got a bit choppy.

Matt

Thanks for the thread - just looked it up as I'm also on a Friday ferry heading for Le Mans...

Out of interest, without going to off topic what sort of fuel economy figures do you achieve on the R Class?

I'm now seriously considering getting one (or possibly a GL), and although my heart says R500 (there are couple of high spec ones for sale right now), common sense and future resale ability suggest the CDI is most likley a better bet. Keen to know what it's like on a European trip as well as around town.

Oh, enjoy the trip too :)

Economy isnt great, I would think tne GL will be similar. I get 30-35mpg at motorway cruise 80mph =1900rpm in 7th. around town low 20's. Its a a great cruising car, very quiet and eventhe diesel can shift when provoked. R500 I would expect at best mid 20's on the mpg but the reduced cost of petrol over diesel would probably equate to at least another 5mpg overall so the differential on ownership isnt that big. The R500 would be a more difficult car to sell in future. Both cars are in the £400 plus on the car tax :eek:

I will report on the numbers I achieve on this weekend next week

Thanks Paul, 30+mpg on the motorway sounds reasonable as does the low 20's around town, its a big car!

You're right about the cost differential in fuel. I had noticed the tax issue. Also seen an early R500 that scraped into the lower tax band by a week!

I like the R Class and the 320cdi's good value, the R500 v good value but not sure too many people want a v8 pertol, 5L 4x4 car these days...

Funny enough from Calais to the french alps I was in convoy on and off with two R classes..

Think it now I am used to 40mpg plus... Don't think I could go back to teens round town and 25 on the motorway..

A bit late but just took covers off headlamps on my 56 R320CDi Sport which has standard halogen lights & found a little lever that moves a shutter in the lamp - I'm assuming that I don't need sticky deflectors after all!

Col:)
