I was wondering if anybody can help me, My Sat-Nav unit on a Mercedes W221 S class 2006 has started playing up! It keeps rebooting after displaying M.B. logo I have been to Mercedes about three weeks ago and the charged me £400 for a diagnostic check and they then informed me that the fault has been rectified, the same problem has started again, I am reluctant to return to Mercedes main dealer as I have been disappointed every time I visit them in the past, as they are more interested in finding other faults then the ones that you originally came to the dealer for! Besides that they are only interested if you have a vehicle that has remaining warranty as I am sure they screw M.B. for faults within the warranty period.
I have checked on-line and I may have a Head unit fault last time Mercedes checked they informed me it was a can-bus fibre optic problem that they rectified, the information I have gathered on line points to a hard drive failure I have removed the hard drive and the unit still boots up and runs for about 12 seconds then shuts down the radio and menu items are there I can reset the language and then it reboots again, I have seen new and second hand units for sale my question is? Can I install one of these without having to go to Mercedes and have them program the unit or car recognised the new head unit within the diagnostics system. If any body can advise I would appreciate, Thank you.

A different COMAND unit will need programming to tell it the options on the car, otherwise the control of things like rear blind wont work any more (there will be no menu item to do it in other words).

Canbus is not fibre. The fibre optic is seperate and goes round the various control units related to audio, and a break will cause audio drop out, but on the S class doesnt normally result in a reboot.

This sounds like a fibre optic fault, but it could be a head unit fault. Not so convinced about hard disk failure especially it behaves same with it removed. Hard drives for NTG2 (which is what you have) are not available from Mercedes, and remember they are automotive hardened drives (reduce the heat/power, increase the shock protection)

£400 for diagnostic to try and work out what was wrong is ridiculous, i'd ask them what they fixed for the £400 (and for a copy of the diagnositc results)
