Folks,

I've started to notice a kind of faint metallic "ringing" noise when driving the coupe.

It doesn't seem to always be there, just sometimes.

Anyone got any experience of this or know what I need to do to stop it?

It's getting a wee bit annoying now!

TIA,

KJ

Turn your phone off:D

Is it engine related, speed related..??

C'mon give us a clue..

Exhaust manifold down pipes heat shielding rattling-very common fault. They are additional thin metal sleeving to help rapid warm up of the exhaust before the catalytic converter. They are crimped/spot welded on to the main pipes-in time they corrode and start to rattle.

That's what I was thinking, but I don't tend to know what I'm talking about, so I thought I'd go an look at mine, but the aircon system's currently being regassed, so I can't.

I don't use the phone in this car as I've not yet got round to finding a mushroom leather console to fit the parrot 3200 and phone holder to!

Its almost like the kind of ringing you get from a distant train!

Regards,

KJ

EDIT - I only notice it around town

Poss handbrke shoes causing the rear drums to ring if they are binding on a bit.

Strip and clean and make sure they're not binding on a bit.

Never, ever replace parts until proper diagnosis has been carried out..

I would think the brakes or brake related?

May calipers / shoes need re ajusting

Jet wash them and see if it helps :)

I once caught the heatshield on my SL exhaust on a vicious ramp (thought I hit the box itself) - it created a heavy vibration that felt terrible. Having jacked it up and straightened out the shield the vibration was gone.
However on driving I also had a horrible "ringing" which was just a tiny section of the heatshield still bent :)

In 1hr I went from horrendous repair bill thoughts to a big smile.

get it up in the air and have a good look around at the sections grober/dieselman have already indicated - its almost certainly just going to be a vibration caused by a misalignment of some sort

Hi,
Is the ringing only when driving or is it there when you rev the engine when stationary?

Sorry just seen you answered this with the edit :(

Hi all, I'v ethe same problem that has started since I had a GSF exhaust fitted. I put the car on ramps yesterday, tighted all the heat shields and it's still there.

I don't have any heat shields actually fitted to the exhaust, so nothing is touching at it all. There is however a slight vibration when I tap the largest shield that is fixed to the body and comes down from near the manifold. Even though this is not touching, could this still vibrate?

Its not so bad when idling, but is constant under any acceleration above 1500 rpm.

My next step is to remove the heatshield completly and see if this sorts the problem. If it does, do I need the shield left on? I don't have a cat on my model (1990 230e saloon).

If not, could it be the cheaper exhause resonating? The guys at HiQ who fitted it did take off a corroded bracket that held the mid section, so it now is only held on at the manifold and toward the rear, although is is very solid and does not move at all when pulled?

If your talking about bracket 143/146 here http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...+++717.413&CT=F&cat=15S&SID=49&SGR=030&SGN=01
I would definitely replace it. It flexibly mounted to the gearbox/cross member and relieves stress on the manifold down pipes. It may also have a "vibration damping" effect on the front part of the exhaust which might account for the extra noise? Its an easy DIY if the old one has been fully removed. Assuming you can get underneath easily. I doubt if the shielding you talk about is causing you a problem but if the screws holding it too the body are slack it might vibrate. Some suitable large lock washers and self tappers should stop it rattling. If you remove it to test for the noise best to replace it afterwards to avoid undue heat from reaching the passenger cabin or more importantly the steering box.

Thanks Graeme, yes thats the bracket (no 146). They guys at HiQ took it off at is was coroded to the old exhaust and threw it away before I arrived. I don't blame them, as the exhaust is very secure, however I do feel it is contributing to the noise.

Do you know if I can get this bracket new from a dealer or parts supplier? Or will I have to make one myself and if so, any thought? Piece of metal bent into shape and bolted on to underside, with large jubilee clip over exhaust?

Ian

You will need to buy the part from Mercedes themselves- (not too expensive) together with the U bolts+spring washers(required for expansion) and nuts to go over the exhaust pipes. You will maybe also need some of the flexible mounting parts/bolts to attach it to the gearbox if the HiQ guys threw them away :( which will increase costs. Hopefully they are still there. :) A jubilee clip simply wont last more than a couple of months:eek:

You do need that hanger otherwise the exhaust will eventually snap just near the cat.
If anything exhausts need more hangers but cost prevails.

Cheers guys, I'll head to my local dealler and have a chat. Unfortunately the guys at HiQ took it all off, including the bolts and threw them away!

Crank the radio up much cheaper! ;)
