Metallic "ringing" noise when driving sometimes

KJ

I would also suggest as per dieselman - rear handbrake springs on shoes.

Push hard on foot pedal a few times when stationary and it might free off.

also try leaving the footbrake on slightly when driving to see if the looseness and therfore the noise disappears.

Surely you can tell by listening, where abouts in the car it is coming from, Front / rear .

Take a passeger for a ride, see what he thinks.

Poss handbrke shoes causing the rear drums to ring if they are binding on a bit.

Some weeks ago, I adjusted the handbrake shoes on my 300E, and since then noticed a whiney, feeble, squeaking noise coming from the rear (of the car). I assumed I had adjusted them too much and that part of the shoe was rubbing on the drum. But it wouldn't go away, even after driving with the parking brake lightly on.

So today I took it all apart and found that one of the retaining springs for the lower shoe had broken up, and the squeaking was the remaining bits sticking between the shoe and the drum. Luckily I still had a decent set from my 200E (same kit) so replaced the old cracked shoes, and fitted new springs.

Job done.:D
