Anyone help please.
W124 300D auto, took to weymouth this weekend, all O.K. until we can to a steep hill, car slowly go to the top, seemed to be slipping in gear, got very hot, smelt burnt etc.
Got home to find no reverse gear, car give a small jump on selection but no movement, any ideas as to fix .fluid level checked O.K.
Cheers

It sounds like one of the clutch packs in the box is toast.
Almost certainly the box requires stripping down.

gearbox strip

Thanks for the quick relpy, Is this a gearbox out job or can the clutch packs be replaced insitu?

As Dieselman says, probably clutch pack/bands worn out. Could be because of age/mileage or lack of gearbox filter/fluid changes.

Box will have to come out. If the clutch pack has been badly burnt, I would expect that the contaminated fluid will have had some impact on the torque converter as well. Expect a bill of over £1K.

regards,

Job

If you want a box then PM me as I have one in a W124 200T going for sale very soon on Ebay, unless a Forum member wants one.

Gearbox

Thanks for the info, does anyone have access to a rebuild manual for the W4A020 box?

parts

I've got a rebuild manual for the gearbox (722.4) anyone know where I can get the parts?

MB dealer, autobox specialist, alternatively if it's just the friction material worn out just have them relined by a local brake / clutch reline company.

Thanks, George Fraser said he can help with the parts and some advice (after he stopped laughing), the plan is to pull the box, strip it and either give up, bin it and get a secondhand box or replace the k2 cluch, anything else worn and put it back (the wife thinks this will be followed by second removal and bining when the repaired box fails to work)
Thanks again for the advice
