I thought I’d share with you this curious occurrence which remains work in progress and as such I’m presently content to run with the advice and guidance from my dealer. If you are due to take delivery of a C63 shortly you may also want to take note in case your car falls into this category.
My new C63 saloon arrived at the dealership a couple of weeks ago and my original hand over date had to be postponed as the car failed it’s PDI on what turned out to be a faulty sender on the tyre pressure monitoring system. For various other reasons I have been unable to pick the car up until last Friday evening, a very enjoyable experience as you’d imagine.
I eventually arrived home very late in the evening and reversed slowly up to my front gate so I could see where the reversing sensors were as I’ve been driving our C250 estate recently and wasn’t sure exactly where they’d be on a saloon, as obvious as that may seem now! When I hit the gate I realised they weren’t there….no damage I should add. Having parked the car and thinking I was going ever so slightly mad, I checked the inside and outside of the car and found no sign of any parking proximity bars or bumper sensors on the car. I checked all of the literature/order documents etc regarding the car and model, all confirming that this item should be standard so naturally a phone call was made to my dealer Saturday morning.
I’ve had several cars from this dealership and I’m pleased to say that they handled the call in the same supportive and professional manner as I have always found them to do and proceeded to reject the car immediately on my behalf liaising with MBUK. On checking the VOC on the factory build spec they were also able to confirm that parking sensors were not included on the build line documents for the car and so were definitely not included on the spec for this particular unit through production. As such they would get the ball rolling for a replacement car on my behalf and apologised profusely for them also having missed the omission on ordering, PDI and the preparation of the car.
Now a few days have elapsed a clearer picture has emerged from MB and it appears that my car is not the only C63 affected by this omission and that there is a full factory investigation going on into why a standard fitment part for all UK bound C63’s (125 Editions and other models I believe) was not on the factory build specification going into production. Already established is that there has been a manual deletion on the build specs of a batch of cars which as you’d expect the factory are keen to get to the bottom of and have a team appointed to fully investigate. Apparently there are also tekkies looking at the viability of retro fitting this option to the standards expected of this manufacturer though the strong indication is that there will be replacement cars provided as soon as possible for those affected of which there appears to be about 20 units (I’m told).
Fortunately I have to be fully versed with consumer rights through the business we operate and so have purposely avoided this trying to direct this thread moving towards the nuances of consumer law. Needless to say I expect a full resolution towards this and the level of support I have so far received from the dealer to continue; time will of course reveal if current promises are kept and I will of course keep this thread updated if it is of interest to others.
Out of curiosity has anyone else taken delivery of one of these other cars affected by this manual deletion as I’d be interested to know if their car also had issues through the PDI as I suspect the issues may be related to the ECU looking for a parallel monitoring system which was missing; also what advice you have been provided on the situation?
In the meanwhile, my early days with the car indicate it will be all I hoped it would be (if slightly tarnished with this complication) and will only get better once I get it run in; until my next new one arrives?!
