ml 270 brabus d4,
hi all.

i have a ml 270 brabus with a auto tip gear box. sometimes the engine seems to rev very high before it changes gear. and once or twice it has lost all drive. once pulled over and stopped and started again its fine, any ideas ?? thanks

Sounds like a lack of fluid. Get it checked asap as it can cause damage if left.

i have had it serviced recently and it was ok ? any other things it could be ? thanks

Yes. A Very worn gearbox or speed sensor issue, Get the gearbox level checked again too.

its only done 104k and most is motor way. will get it checked with oil again. can i get my hands on the dip stick for the gear box or do i have to keep going to the garage ? is that sensor something the star computer will pick up ?

Go to a garage that has the dipstick and a Star.

ok thanks for your help. will let you know

as already suggested; chances are that it is VERY low on fluid and you are on the verge of wrecking the box and that will cost you £££££ mucho. Get it sorted quickly!

ok thanks smiley will get it checked tommorow and see what it says. any other things if the oil level is ok ?

Aren't Brabus chips renowned for killing the box with the torque increase ?

not too sure. would of thought they would of looked into it to make sure the extra torque and horse power was ok for the existing spec of the truck ? any other ideas like sensors etc. its only 225 bhp.

Quick google reveals ml270 cdi brabus is making 100ft lbs more torque than the 430 v8 engine:D 295 for the v8 and 399 ml ish!

I remember the disco td5 manual could almost be chipped to the limit, coolers, turbos etc, whereas the auto was strictly chip only as the box couldnt handle it.

Have you checked your gearbox plug as it may have gearbox oil shooting down the loom into the gearbox ecu which is located inside the car.
You can normaly see an oil patch near the foot hand brake pedal.

If you don't sort this problem you have then the gearbox will lock permanently until put on a computer.

There's a few stories on here of Brabus chips wrecking gearboxes ( albeit on the smaller engined models , 220 etc ) ....

Seems the 220 gearbox is near its limit as standard , not sure about the 270 and 320 ones ...

Good luck with getting it sorted.

hi all. have been to the garage for the star computer readout. ETC 146 APPEARS. points to 3 things.
1 gear box oil. " it was checked and was fine "
2 an internal problem with the gears and mechainal part of gear box, worse case senario new recon box.
3 the electrical plug inside the box is getting wet and or the speed controler indside the box has gone wrong and or the oil has travelled up the loom and damaged the unit.

another thing i have found out that the early ml's had in the service book to do a gear box service at a certain time.then on my year veichle 2001 to around 2006 they stopped issuing a service to be done as they said it was ok for life. when they made the new one they then started again issuing service intervals for the gear box.

so i am going to get the gear box serviced which apparently is changing filter and oil and also the electronic bit renewed and the loom.

quoted £318.71 for the work by mercedes specialist.

any thoughts ?

well that was mentioned. it needs a service any way as apparently they should not of took the gear box service out of the service book in the guys opinon. so if they service it and he said he could just change the plug and hope. but if it doesnt work to do it all again would be more than to fit the new electronic bit in the first place !!! so seems sense to do it in one fail swoop , its done 104k
