Hi,

My Ml needs a service in 6000miles, its 2003, 85000miles and its a diesel. Its the first service under ownership of me! :) I know the brake pads and discs are fine, as well as the tyres. The service is an A, is there anything I should get checked? Glow Plugs? Transmission Oil? Run the Star Diagnostics?

Thanks

Check the serpentine belt for signs of cracking (alternator drive belt). It would be wise to have the transmission oil and filter renewed if its not been done previously and also check the the seals at the gearbox electric plug are not leaking (a common problem but easily and cheaply rectified), glow plugs are only replaced when they actually fail which will bring a warning on the dashboard...(warning is = the glow lamp will remain on for a short while after the engine has started indicating one or more plugs have failed), fuel filter might be due renewal.
The guage on the air filter box will indicate whether the air filter is due for renewal, if the dial moves towards the red then change it, the knob on the guage is for resetting it after fitting the new filter. Finally, with the engine top plastic cover removed (the fuel filter and power steering reservoir are under this cover) check for any 'chuffing' noise and/or black tar like substance around the injectors....this indicates one or more injector seals are leaking........a common problem but not too bad repair job, parts cost circa £3 per injector.

Thats all for now........

Thank you very much! I have actually noticed that the Glow Plug light comes on when I turn the ignition then goes off after a short while. Do the Glow Plugs affect the performance?

Thanks again

The glow light should always come on and stays on for a few seconds after turning on the ignition, it should go off and stay off after starting the engine, if it comes back on again after the engine has started then there is 1 or more plugs failed.

The glow plugs have no effect on performance and, in the case of cdi engines, are only there to aid low emissions on start-up...........a cdi engine will comfortably start without aid from glowplugs.

ps................when renewing the fuel filter make sure you 'pre-fill' the new one with diesel fuel before you fit it, otherwise, you will have to crank the engine forever before it starts.

Hi Thanks again!

The fuel filter was changed 2yrs ago by MB. I have owned the vehicle for 14 months now and it was serviced before I received it. 14 months have now elapsed, however the Assyst still says 6000miles to go? Lastly it previously had an A-service, surely it can not be due for another one...can it?

Thanks
