2001 ML270 CDI
Hi,

my car is a 2001 ML270 - the three orange lights on the left of the dash have lit up. Initially intermittent but now permanent. I am told by the nice people at HA Lock that I need an APS pump.

What I do know is that this comes in two parts, A control unit and a hydraulic unit. According to MB these are the part numbers:

Hydraulic pump - 004 431 0412
Control unit - 163 545 0416

I have been offered a host of other part numbers on ABS units (generally both together) which it is claimed will fit - at prices from £60 to £480. The two are more than £2k new from MB and not an option.

A bit of help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Had 'nice people' a star diagnose machine? If not, the get the codes read first! No point to change part blindly. Intermittent ABS may also come due to speed sensor, faulty brake light switch, low battery voltage...

Get the codes read by a good Indy with star, they are quite common for the hydraulic unit to go faulty.
There is company's out there that can repair the units for certain faults once you know what the codes are

I have the same problem, have has it diagnosed, ESP fault, BAS fault, VP fault and ETC fault
Is it better to source these parts first then take it to a garage or just get them to do it.

Also my steering rack has leaks, 2 seals were replaced a few months ago, but it drips out weekly. DO I replace the other seals or get a replacement rack

thanks

Yes, they had the full Mercedes diagnostic rig. I don't fault the diagnosis in any way.

I'm confused by the apparent variety of part numbers for one part and what may or may not fit on the car.

I have not been able to find anything to match the numbers I have been given (other than new from MB) but I have been offered six other part numbers on ABS assemblies that it has been claimed by the vendors will fit and came off identical cars.

Will any of them work on my car?

This may not be the problem, just the experience I've had, along with a few others
The electrical brushes go on the ABS pump motor. You get three warning lights on the dash and virtually everyone tells you to get a new ABS pump (cost around 1200 quid) when actually all it needs is replacement brushes in the motor (cost around 5 quid).

Read through this thread, its a bit long, but it does describe in detail the fix
