ML270 Kickdown problem

ML270
I have recently acquired an ML270. The kickdown doesn't work and it seems a bit slow unless I put my foot down quite a way - I suppose this may be normal as seems to go well with a fair bit of accelerator. I can't feel any extra resistance on the last bit of accelerator travel as I could with my old C200. When the speed limiter is on, it doesn't drop out when I put my foot to the floor. Any Ideas?

They are slow to kickdown.....However, Have you tried a gearbox reset?

Google for the words mercedes gearbox reset and you will find a procedure.

A good idea but it doesn't explain why the limiter fails to drop out. I suspect that there may be a faulty kickdown switch or ( and I've just thought of this ) I Know the dealer had removed the carpets to wash them and I hope has replaced the driver's side one wrongly. I'll have a look when I get home on Tuesday.

There is no such procedure. Unfortunately the only way to reset the gearbox adaptation settings is to connect it to STAR. The gearbox will learn from fresh after.

Also I would get it hooked up to STAR to see if there are any fault codes logged. This may help with the kickdown issue.

Ta Da, doesnt mean it works.

That procedure has been going around for years and years. It doesnt do anything to the gearbox.

People on that forum are fairly convinced. I had my gearbox reset after an ecu remap - made a huge difference.

Im sure its just a 'in your mind' type of thing.

After carrying out the reset you end up trying to 'look' for changes and differences. Things which have always been like that all of a sudden seem new as you are paying a bit more attention and looking for an improvement of some sort after the 'reset'.

In this case, the gearbox changes become smoother all of a sudden but most people generally wont have paid any attention to the auto gear changes before the reset so how would they know?

That does work for a short while but the gearbox soon re-adapts to the driving style.
That is actually the accelerator pot reset.

So the key prcedure does owrk and it is not just a placebo affect?

Yes but how about my problem? I expect topics to stray but this is a bit quick.

Well, give the key method a shot. Check the throttle pedal is not getting jammed (they tend to be quite loose on ml's) and check carpet depth/pedal movement! Otherwise, I am afraid it will need star analysis.

Have just checked and the kickdown switch doesn't come up at all. I hope a new one will help.
Does anyone know where I can find a part number?

i have a similar problem. since owning car for 12 months have had issues with it losing drive and then OK after stopping and starting. Had all the seals changed and now the gear change is smoother but kickdown is still internittent to say the least and will work for a while on say 1 in 5 journeys and then stop on the same journey, Tip works but wont rev above about 3000. Been to two garages including an autobox specialist and still not solved. Car has done 145k and the 12k in last 12 monhts apart from the ocasional stop and start to get drive back have been without breakdown. Any suggestions?
