Hi all

Having a problem with my 2009 ML350 W164

It seems to be an intermittent problem at the moment but here it is.

There seems to be a problem with the gearbox changing gear sometimes, it can occasionally refuse to change gear on the auto box and even when trying to use the paddle shift.

I also get a different problem where the car goes into a limp mode and is down on power

And on top of that when stationary it occasionally will not select a gear but turning off and on again normally clears this

I can normally clear the faults by pulling over and starting the engine again but it does seem to be getting

Any ideas on what could be causing the faults?

You need to have the car scanned and report any codes found.

There’s too many possibilities to properly begin any diagnostic.

Ok will do a diagnostic check and see what it flags up, need to do it for another problem so 2 birds with one stone on this one.

With these electronically controlled boxes its often the conductor plate - if its that it can be changed with the gearbox in situ- as suggested get the fault codes read by MB star.

Hi Duncan,

Had a similar issue with my 2006 GL. Turned out to be the conductor plate but as others have recommended a diagnostic using STAR is the place to start. I use Pentangle in Calmore who were excellent in sorting out the gearbox issue and other bits a pieces over the years.
