Needs advice please. My 2002 ML500, 86K miles, had two new tyres fitted recently at which time I had the tracking done becauase the old ones were wearing unevenly in my opinion. Shortly after the BAS ESP light came on. I took the car to the Merc Dealer and they diagnosed that they needed to do a laser tracking on all four wheels. When I got the car back the light was off however came on again later in the day. I returned it to the dealer who checked it out. Collected it again and once again, after a short drive, on came the light. Back to dealer who had it for a day or two. Said that there was nothing wrong with the car, drives well, however that the diagnostics still say that the steering angle is off although they say that the car drives without fault and that the steering is straight. Dealer chap said that in his opinion, if the car was his, he would run it with the light on otherwise the next step is to spend a fortune changing the steering colum in order to see whether that is the problem. Car drives fine although I am unhappy that the light is still on. Any help much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Try changing the brake light switch first, it's only a tenner from the dealer.

Failing that take it to an independent MB specialist who has STAR to get it diagnosed.

Hi ellie5856,

welcome to the forum

Surprised the dealers STAR didn't pin point the problem or that the fault code didn't change after some alignment. If it needs tracking, I have heard wheels in motion are very good.

When these lights were on my dashboard, it was simply the wheel sensor that needed changing.

My vehicle wouldn't let me drive like normal with those lights and the lights did go away and came back when they wanted.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

Hello

Mine was a speed sensor on the inside of a rear wheel arch. Also my ML didn't have the 'simple' £10 brake switch under the pedals it was built into the server.

Rather than try the switch get it on a star machine and the fault should be tracable.

Thank you for your advice. I think the problem is that the dealer did the work and diagnostics and it still showed that the steering angle was out. The dealer says that whilst a diagnosis shows that the steering angle is out that it isnt out. Says the next try would be to replace the steering angle sensor/steering column however they are not sure. My dilemma is that this is a lot of money to try! I told them that it might be the brake switch and presumably they have checked that. Still pondering!?
