I'm sorry - I know nothing about oil. Last night on the motorway, I got a message saying 'check oil at next refuel' which obviously I took to mean that my oil level was low. The message disappeared today though.

Reading the threads, people seem to talk about Mobil 1 as the best oil, but my service book has Mobil Synt written in as the oil used.

So, question is, can I mix Mobil 1 with Mobil Synt, or must I use Mobil Synt to top up.

Also, is there any record of this message coming up in error (it was -1 C at the the time)

Thanks for any advice?

They are one and the same oil. Mobil 1 is fully synthetic "Synt" :)

This is one of my all-time beefs with MB dealers when they fill in service books.
Why oh why do they not fill in the full description/grade of the oil used in the service. Would take seconds to do. I am guessing ( and I can only guess  ) that the oil used was Mobil Synt S Turbo Diesel 5W-40 to MB spec sheet 229.3 approved oils. This is an appropriate oil for your car PROVIDED it isn't fitted with a Euro4 DIESEL particulate filter in which case it should be filled with oil to spec 229.31 or 229.51

There are lots of different "MOBIL 1's" some may be suitable some not. Your best plan is to phone the dealer and ask EXACTLY what oil was employed in your last service and top up with that.

Sorry if I trivialised a very complex topic.

The best solution would be to call into your dealership and request the oil. I'm sure they would be more than happy to top it up for you. :)

Hi,
I bit the bullet and got a litre of oil from the dealer (Mobil 1) ensuring the correct grade, i buy from elsewhere now.

Mobil 1 is £19.99 for 4ltr in Costco

Phil

Yep, but +VAT and obviously + being a member (£20/year IIRC and only certain trades etc can join)

Still about the cheapest supplier for Mobil 1 0W-40 in the UK though :)

I'm not sure that the 'check oil level at next fuel fill' is actually a low oil warning. It does say in the book that the oil level has reached a critical point but my wife had the same warning in the ML last week at almost exactly half way to the next 'Assyst plus' service mileage.
So off I went and bought some Mobil 1 ESP, checked the level and it is closer to full than low!
I wonder if this is the cars way of reminding us that there is a dipstick and that we should not act as such?

I had a 1 litre of oil in my boot left by MB dealer. Shell Hellix - look under the carpet, where spare wheel is usually placed.

Cheers
Chris

When I get this warning - it usually takes the best part of a litre....

Hi,
I topped my AMG up with a litre of engine oil and it put 1,000 miles more on the service assyst (before topping up was 900 miles before servicing required after it was 2,200 miles), so it pays to keep it on the upper mark.
