Mobile speed cameras not just checking speed!

So the other day I gets a ticket through the door saying a mobile speed camera has clocked me not wearing a seatbelt!
I didn't know they could but there you go picture and all!
Be warned guys they can do you for anything now

Good to know, thanks.

Also, I am aware that some people still hold a mobile phone while driving (which this camera will probably also spot), but I didn't think anyone would be driving without wearing the seatbelt - I'm curious to know why would you that? On the same note, it would be interesting to know what action - if any - will the authorities take if the front seat passenger or back seat passengers weren't wearing a belt? Or if a child was in the car without a proper child seat or booster seat?

Likewise with London taxi’s.
9/10 times I wear a seat belt but there is always an odd occasion that I don’t and there are certainly more cameras of various types in London.
Edit
As a passenger of course.

The stats may surprise you:

“During weekdays in Great Britain, levels of seatbelt wearing remain high overall. However, reported road casualty statistics show that a much higher proportion of car occupant fatalities are not wearing seatbelts.

“These statistics show, for weekdays in England in autumn 2023:

  • 97.6% of all vehicle drivers were observed using a seatbelt (compared with 96.4% for Scotland based on data collected in early 2024)
  • 95.2% of all vehicle front seat passengers were observed using a seatbelt (compared with 95.7% for Scotland)
  • seatbelt wearing rates varied notably by vehicle type, and were higher for cars and lower for other types of vehicle.
“The latest road casualty statistics for 2022 show that 21% of car occupant fatalities in reported road collisions were not wearing a seatbelt. This indicates that car occupants who do not wear a seatbelt are disproportionately likely to be killed in road collisions.”

The mobile cams/AI cams were widely publicised a couple of months ago.
I'm all for them as the claim is the cams can ID those using mobile phones and not wearing seat belts (front seats only I guess) and possibly speed limit checks.
I've also seen items re police going around in HGV cabs and catching drivers of all vehicle sizes using mobile phones etc.
I'm all for them as those using a mobile phone and trying to drive not only hold up traffic but can be a major player in accidents.

I'm not sure why people don't wear seatbelts but the mass of evidence shows that in the vast majority of accidents wearing a seatblet saves lives and reduces or stops injuries. This is turn not only saves us/NHS/taxpayers hundreds of millions but saves the misery that goes hand-in-hand with serious accidents.

I won't allow anyone in my car, front or back not to wear a seat belt as the passengers in the back when not wearing a seatbelt can be a danger to me in a heavy impact, etc

Therefore, I'm 100% for these new cams.

So were you also done for speeding, or was it just the seatbelt? If the latter then that's an interesting change in policy. But I guess it makes sense - if they're paying someone to be there with a speed camera why not also use it to record other offences (presumably they'll get people on phones as well).

The new 'AI' cameras mentioned above are fully automated and AFAIK only check for phone use and not wearing a seatbelt - they're not speed cameras.

Legally, I don't have to wear a seat belt while I'm working!

Same here.

A female friend went through the windscreen of her car (not wearing a belt) and will carry the scars on her face for the rest of her life. She was lucky she didn't die.

Cameras wont pick up on white van drivers who fasten the belt but only slip the diagonal over their shoulder after it is fastened such that only the diagonal offers any restraint - though more likely a garrotting.

Why wouldnt you be wearing a seatbelt? its not 1982!
Indeed.

The date clearly a reference to the beginning of 1983 when it first became compulsory to wear seatbelts in the front of cars - for a 3-year trial period! It took nearly ten years of several failed attempts to get a bill through parliament before the trial period was introduced. Thankfully both houses voted overwhelmingly to retain the law three years later.

It was another three years before children had to belt up in the back, and a further two before adults had to. It wasn’t until as recently as 2006 that children had to use “appropriate child restraints” rather than relying on standard seatbelts that they could easily slide out of in an accident.

Even today, an alarmingly high number of children aren’t as safely restrained as they could be. My nine-year old daughter still travels in a high back booster seat with side impact protection. Her peers only use backless boosters or nothing. Their parents all care, but clearly not as much as us.

I've always worn one, but many of my multi-drop van-driving buddies didn't. The only time I had to do without was when I drove the company 7.5 tonner, which wasn't fitted with them.
It felt as unnatural as going to work with no strides on.
To be fair Mike, for those ills you deserve one! 😇
I know. I'm ashamed of myself...hanging's too good for me :)

Honestly I don't know why I didn't have it on! I usually do.
Must have just been distracted when getting in and setting off But I can't remember what.

What’s the bloody point in this?

Surely the time it takes them to slip on the diagonal, they could have just clipped it in as per how it’s meant to be used??
