Just booked ,online, the boys Ford Fiasco in for an MOT at the local Halfords as we do with all our vehicles , they now charge a BOOKING FEE for a feckin MOT , WTF is that all about ?

At the time of booking a pop-up informed me that i had made a good decision in booking through Halfords and so far today around 5000 motorists had also made that sensible decision , not a bad earner for doing f**k all.

Got to love rip off Britain.

Plus , to make things ten times worse the Laughing Cheese spreading triangles have been reduced in size , but the circular box hasn`t so they rattle around now making it blatantly obvious that they are smaller , unlike the price.

Rant over , just off to find an (old) wee guy and have a fight.

Take the cars somewhere else then, booking fee my ^r$€….

Grumpy too, local MB trying it on with, need this, can’t do this without that, but hopefully the last visit to them…. warranty ended and service contract about too…

That's an absolute "£$%^ing scandal.......

Who do I write to at Laughing Cow Cheese? They'll be laughing on the other sides of their face when I've finished with them 🤬

Booking fees..
Whatever next? Charging people for a copy of the MOT print out?! 20p if you want a plastic sleeve to put it in?!
Very grating indeed.

Less product or service for the same price and the same product or service for an higher price are pretty much the only levers businesses can pull when faced with rising costs. Neither is popular with buyer, but the alternative is that the business ceases to be.

I had no idea that a copy of the MOT or a plastic sleeve was even an option. Scratching my head to understand why these wouldn’t be charged for. The MOT station is a business, and the MOT fee is to perform the MOT test rather than provide additional stationary items.

^ This.

At the current rate charged for MOT tests I have the distinct feeling that the business doing the test loses money on each one they undertake. But they can't increase the price (as that's set by the govt), so they add a "booking fee".

I was talking to the guy that owns a garage that I use, he says he takes in £5,500 a week just doing MOT's, just looking at cars and no repairs included in that.
He sees it as easy money.

The MOT test centre I use allows for one MOT and one MOT retest per tester/ramp per hour. They don’t cut corners, but work at pace, and they use all of that time by the time they drive cars in/out of the workshop and do the paperwork.

Even assuming the test station pays the prevailing maximum fee, <£450 per ramp doesn’t allow much room for profit after taking into account tester salary, reception salary (or equivalent) for queries /bookings /payments, building costs, insurance, etc.

Exactly. Now add in the initial cost and maintenance cost of equipment (the lifts, brake testers, beam testers, emissions test equipment, etc.) and I doubt it hits break even let alone delivers a profit.

Probably had loads of 'no shows' , if two people do not keep the appointment they will probably struggle to break even that day ...bit like selfish Cnuts not turning up for their NHS appointment....and look at the $hit that organisation is in.

Having said that I wouldn't let anyone at Halfords touch anything mechanical that I own.

Not done it myself , but local councils have MOT centres , they have no workshop facilities , so they have no dog in the fight when it comes to repairs.

Does beg the question if that the car fails on a massive safety issue how do you get it fixed ? You can't legally rive it off site 🤔

an MOT tester can only do one MOT per hour by law, its all recorded on the computer system. out of the £54.85 fee the tester won't get much of that !!!!! its never been a well paid job :( unless you work for RR or Mercedes or some other high class dealer.
plus most MOT stations do fail repairs.

Plus the occasional palm grease no doubt ..... Happy days 😁
