Thought I'd fill the car right up, due to me being lazy on these cold days! and boy was i in for a shock.

£77

In all the years I've been driving this is the most I've paid to fill up:mad:

Mind you its telling me i have nearly 700mls of motoring...mmmm:rolleyes:

I've been quite used to that kind of number for many years  :D.

Not strictly mine, but most I've ever paid to fill up was about £130 to fill up by brothers Touareg (100 litre tank!)

That's been a familiar figure for my parents in recent years (CL420) and now the norm for me in the E Coupe! My most expensive has been near £80 filling up on Shell V Power.

£30/£40 as i dont like caryying unecessary weight.;)

£80 in the ML this week. Sadly won't do 700 miles though!!

I filled up a 2000 yr S500 in Dubai a few years back from empty, at a cost of £7

Probably on my drive down to Italy, paid 70-ish in the Chrysler whale-thing...

That's £1.30 a litre. Something is wrong.

Hmmmm, true wasn't £1.30 / litre but then not far off though - bought lots of snacks though at the same time that's probably why I remember the £130 :D Think it was nearer £1.18 / litre  at the time (Diesel)

Filled up yesterday and it cost me £104I could have cried:(

£109.71 in the S Class, the sad bit was 288 miles later it ran out :o
Now i see why we normally put £40 a go, not that depressing!

Recently I have actually been filling it up at half way so only putting in aroud £50 and it does actually take the pain away.:o

Once upon a time, on the M40 in a land not-so-far away, (also known as the day my mothers car ran out of fuel on the M40 while bringing me to school) a friendly chap from the AA told me that its ideal to fill the tank every time as this hinders rust forming on the inside of the tank as well as avoids sucking up the grunge at the bottom of the tank (this bit refers more to running the car dry)....

While I believe the second bit (though the fuel filter should take care of it...); I've always been uncertain on the first... Maybe you could shed some light. Is it significantly worse not to cover the inside of your tank with fuel?

Are some tank's galvanized (or otherwise rust-proofed) while others not?

Michele

edit: excuse grammar, spelling and coherency... long night...

The new GL has a 100 litre fuel tank, one of the largest on production cars I am led to believe, although I did see that the Toureg has a big tank too. I have made sure that I have in writing that it will be filled on delivery! The thought of paying over £100 to fill it up annoys me to say the least. I agree that physcologically it is less painful to put £50 in at a time!

Most modern tanks are now made of plastics, but he was correct, condensation will form inside a metal tank and it will eventually corrode. Keeping the tank full stops air/oxygen starting the corrosion process. I had fuel vapours in a car years ago and removed the tank to find the top half was pinholed all over and the metal was wafer thin. The bottom half was OK.

I was in the garage the other day and the bloke in front of me was signing for the fuel he'd just put in his artic. All 470 quids worth.. gulp.

He is probably still on the floor passed out after seeing you post that picture of his engine on a wooden pallet. :D
