If your car fails on the MOT for having a hole on the exhaust and they recommend a new exhaust. If you patch the hole can they still fail it because they feel it needed to be replaced and not fixed?

No they can't, the fail is for a leak of gas...no leak, no fail.

What he ^ said

l remember the good ol' days when a couple of jubilee clips, an old coke can and some gun gum was considered a satisfactory and permenent repair.

Coke cans are no good because they are made from thin aluminium...However a clean Kidney bean can...;) :o :D

They claim the inside of the box (not sure how they looked inside) is falling apart. I patched it last year and it was fine to pass the MOT, I think the gun gum had fallen off where it was sitting idle for 3 months

The inside of the box isn't covered by MOT other than if it makes excessive noise from the tailpipe.
Did they say it would fail, or was it an advisory? Advisories are just that...Advice. It sounds like they are telling you the zorst is sh*gged..which is true, but not a fail.

Daughters car recently passed MOT with large hole in the rear box. It passed the emissions test and was not too noisy. We changed it regardless but was not a fail point.
