MOT failure Altered reg. no.

Come into London and its a different story

I work on the Strand, and see dodgy plates every day. E.g. new Bentley with "MB55 PUR" changed to "MB'S SPUR" courtesy of an illegal font for the "5"s, altered spacing, and a black bolt head. Somehow I doubt he will get pulled over, and if it does happen I don't think he'll be too worried ...

The money he saves on the congestion charge every day will be a lot more than the fine anyway!

Sprinter vans and the whole "army" gets out to check the car over and do the driver for many offences as possible...

:D Anybody would think our MP's usually live in the London area.

After 2am we have FIVE Police Officers patrolling Brixham, Paignton and Torquay?? I think you would be unlucky to get caught committing any crime, be it motoring or actual crime. Oh and yes it is just five for the three towns. I've seen five police officers stood on one street corner in London. :)

Thats like saying does it really matter if driving around with fog lights on all the time during the day/night in normal weather conditions (but that is illegal) -
That's true but haven't you ever driven at 31mph in a 30?

Driving with front Fog Lights on in the day means the driver is gay (which is fine).

Perhaps there should be zero tolerance but at the end of the day, lets fight the important battles.

To a certain extent I agree. I think people that purposely try to mis-figure their plate in order for it to read something different or even alter the spacing are wrong.

I myself run with plates that have the correct spacing but are imported from Germany, meaning that the font (although completely readable) is not to UK standard and it has a "D" where UK should be. Again I'm not fully happy I think it is obsurd that people are forced to have plastic plates that get water in and start looking rubbish and faded after a few years. My plates are made out of alluminium with the characters stamped into it. This is the only reason I purchased them.

Some people agree and some don't. I've heard many opinions and one or two where people feel that they are right and that's it, everybody else is wrong.

If its just a matter of spacing, I really dont see what the big deal is. If its fancy fonts or bits cut off letters its a different story. I really think as motorists we pay more than enough tax and fines already!
A car I had failed a while back for this, I didnt even notice there was anything wrong with the plates id been driving with them on for more than 3 years, it was out by just a few mm, a complete waste of time.

Spacing I don't have a problem with, but some of the plates on cars are truely taking the p1ss.

I saw one the other day, font was totally different, a no.2 shaped like an O, very very dubious.

I admit my plates aren't 100% legal, but I do it for cosmetic reasons, the spacing on them is correct.

Hi aka$h
Are you being serious, or are you saying this tongue in cheek?

Was it a plate that benefited from being just a 'few' mm out????

Looks like I am out of kelter with a few ??? forum members.

Absolutley agree with you 100% on that BUT so is mis-spacing numbers/letters to make up a name like i.e. D4VE S very gay too... :p :D

Cherished number plates are the best and look very classy...

Guys, might want to easy up on the "Gay" comments. Although I understand it as an expression it is possible that someone might become offended.

Just a brotherly figure watching over :)

*edit* for those wondering, we are expecting our first born soon so no i'm not that way inclined :)

I'm only joking Abbos - I apologise if any of my comment (s) were insensitive/offensive to anyone.

Hi John,
the plate I had on the car at the time was 1P**, the plate looks very different to a normal plate and was worth over £10k, the few mm was between the 1 and the P, it did not spell a word no matter how I misplace the letters. It was a genuine mistake and was really only out by 3-4mm. Things like this the police tend o use a little discreation over, these plates were on the car when I was pulled for speeding and the officer didnt even mention it.

:o I'm sure the contributor meant it to be used in the context of:

1 happy:
We had a gay old time down at the dance hall.

2 If a place is gay, it is bright and attractive:
The streets were gay and full of people.

And Not the modern hijacked term

Hehehe expected a few comments this morning and though I also might have been hung out for people to throw old apples and eggs at. :D

My friend's father was having his car serviced and they pointed out that the plate was wrong, one of the letters was incorrect, was K and should have been X or something! He's owned the car for a year or two and had never noticed, the plate was on the car when he bought it and was made by a main dealer!

I remember a few years ago getting a car from the lease company - the plates ended "NPE" while the glass engraving was "NFE". I though no more of it until pulled for speeding, and they did a plate check........"NPE" belonged to a different car! Showed them the glass engraving, which checked out - so was let off with a wagged finger.

Got new plates made by place next door, informed lease company who had the reg docs, etc.......they all said "NPE" too! They gave me an interim car, men from DVLA came and took the car away for inspection and cam eback 2 weeks later with completely new plates and reg docs - but no explanation as to what happened........

I always cross-check everything now.......

When I eventually received the V5 for our Sprinter it stated the vehicle was a red petrol pick-up?

Surely we all have a duty to check everything. We are all human, we all make mistakes. Like any reasonable person I simply filled in the form pointing out the errors. I suppose a quick VIN check corroborated my observations and no further checks were made. A new V5 was simply posted to me.

One of my father's cars was originally listed as a "three-wheeled steamroller". He photocopied the V5 for humour and posted it back with a correction, I think it was either an allegro or a marina (dates the anecdote!).

I just saw a 2005 Bentley Continental GT on the Strand wearing "pre-1973" plates (silver text on black background), front and back. Registration was "34T" - presumably someone rich who doesn't want to pay the congestion charge ...

I'm not too sure about this business of avoiding the congestion charge through altered plates. I'm in London frequently and I forgot to pay it in advance like I normally do and called them albeit later in the day. They said they could not find any record of my reg number anywhere and to call back the following Tuesday in case there was a delay in processing (I called on a long weekend). When I called again I was told again that there wasn't any record of my car having been in the congestion charging zone.

Great I thought - obviously won't have to pay it then. A few days later I got the penalty charge notice and included with the letter was a photo of my car - (well 2 photo's actually) taken from the front, together with the location and time of the event! :p

The plates on one of my cars do look slightly odd :D but they managed to track the car down no problem.
