Merc front springs
MOT - Garage claim that front spings need replacing?Hi I have a 1997 S320
AMC of Tooting, London have just surveyed the car for an MOT and claim that both front suspension springs need replacing, cost £400
allegedly both springs have snapped? right at the base of the mounting?
oddly they are also me to alloow them to keep the car for a further 3 days as well. Its the second time Ive used them for services etc
a. Is this normal? never heard of suspension springs needing to be replaced before? They claim its an everyday occurance??
This is a common fault on Mercs. Both my 190s went! Initially the coating of the spring is damaged by road debris or flexion or rubbing. Corrosion then starts and stress cracks follow and finally the spring breaks. Mercedes used to put sacrificial zinc? anodes between the spring and lower spring perch to combat this but this isnt foolproof. Front springs seem to more vulnerable to this because- they are more exposed to debris- road salt- carry heavier loads, than the rears. In the good old days Merc replaced them FOC as a known fault , if you had a full service history. Dont know about today. These high speedbumps dont help either!!
