Check the obvious bits... all lights including high beam, indicators, brake lights etc, horn, wipers for operation and for not smearing, seat belts, etc.

It's not a big issue if you have a blown bulb, but the way they do it these days is that you get a 'fail' they then change the bulb, and grant you a 'pass' - and all this is recorded online for all eternity.

Top up the screenwash and check the number plate lamps, horn, doors all open and shut properly, no condensation in lamps, no pale indicator bulbs, tyre condition and pressure and that all seat belts buckle and are not frayed. Ensure the number plates are legal.

Don't know where to start really.
Check your tyre pressures - tread depth speed rating. Don't forget the spare if fitted.
If you car has a DPF and has not had any long journeys get the engine up to operating temp and run for at least 20 minutes to allow it to regenerate. Exhaust should be secure on it's mountings not be blowing or too noisy
Check all the lights work- indicators ,sidelights, headlights main and dip, reversing and rear fog numberplate .
Check the condition of the windscreen wipers - no frayed blades -- top up windscreen washer reservoir if required. Windscreen immediately in drivers eye line should be free of damage/scratches
Check that inertial seatbelts lock when pulled quickly.
Check handbrake is operational.
Check Foot brake pulls the car up evenly.
You can only present your car for MOT within one month of its expiry if you want to retain the full year renewal and not lose a month.

To be honest one day before the test doesn't give much time to rectify any faults.

Take along a packet of biscuits a box of cream cakes and some industrial sized cups of coffee, just as a 'hello there' for the tester. Not that it should be ever be considered as an incentive to the outcome of your MOT that will undoubtedly pass.

Also ensure tyres are legal and not worn excessively and/or unevenly.

My MOT tester will usually tell me if a bulb is blown and replace it (at cost) but pass the MOT which I think is fair.

I usually check all that has been mentioned anyway.

Previously a family member was awaiting his MOT results (at home, had dropped car off) and I went online to check...the MOT had been done and it had failed, online checker showed the faults before the garage had rang him!

Clean it! I always do mine before I take it down, my friendly local garage MOT bod pointed out to me many years ago that testers are only human, show them a shiny clean car and they'll think it's more likely to have been cared for and they're less likely to dig around. Turn up with a car that's minging and they'll assume it's unloved and poorly maintained, and view it accordingly. Worth a few quid to run it through the car wash and hoover it..

Cheers,

Gaz

Make sure your windscreen is clean if your wiper blades need changing a clean screen with wash squirted on it will clean without smears, when tested, and the other posts have covered everything else,Bruce has got more money than sense, forget the cream cakes a packet of Hobnobs will get the desired result.

Thanks all for your advice and comments... car is fresh, clean.. lights water checked and topped up.. handbrake and brakes bob on.. just need to put tyres up tomorrow morning... fingers crossed will keep you all posted, plus I've emptied my boot too!! [emoji4] x

Why - is a body in the boot an MOT fail?

It prevents them from checking the rear suspension mounting points. - I wish they wouldn't pull all trim up because they break the clips and it doesn't got back right.

Not 100% on this , but if you have headlamp washers, make sure they are working. I believe its an MOT fail if they don't?

The spare tyre is not a testable item unless it is fitted to the car as one of the 4 road wheels.

The MOT on my SL is due on 6th August so I have it booked in for a health check tomorrow so if anything needs doing it can be done prior to the MOT. This is to avoid the ignominy of any advisories or a failure showing up in the cars history, it hasn't had any for the past 10 years and I don't want that to change. :)
