MPG not what I was told! E Class estate SE 2016

If it's any consolation, I have a 1.6 petrol mini (kerb weight 1200Kg) and despite the fact that I drive reasonably sensibly, it does less than 30 MPG.

Ask the dealer to take it back and buy another car. You might lose out on the deal, but if the fuel consumption is that bad then you’ll make it up with the better fuel economy of the replacement. You’ll never be happy with this one, and life is too short.
 
My E250 estate AMG Sport on 18’s will do around 52-54mpg if I keep it under 70mph and nurse it that’s in ECO mode with the ac on. Best I’ve had out of it on a 50 mile run from home to work is 61.4mpg and I had to drive at 56mph and proper carefully to obtain that.

Since the weathers changed it’s dropped off a bit and if your doing 70-75 then it’s more like 46-48mpg.

These figures are all on the same route and usually when it’s not rush hour.

Got to say, check your tyre pressures. Both my new cars were delivered 10% low. I run on mid way between low and high pressure figs. So far on a 75mph motorway run both our cars give 50 to 51 mpg (on their summer 20" tyres). I have noticed though that even relatively light throttle inputs can eat fuel. I was expecting to get slightly higher figures, but for a two tonne car it's good enough.

Also having checked by manual calculation, the trip computer figure us accurate. On my last few cars they were about 10% over. If this was the case in your car the computer would be showing about 52mpg and you would be happy??

Seriously check your tyre pressures and if they are low I'd be amazed if your economy didn't improve.

Also what mileage does the car have? Has it been fully serviced with OE parts (particularly thinking the oil and also the air filter. If you are using the air con is it fully charged or else the compressor will be working harder, are the tyres MO spec etc etc???
 
Perhaps doing a gearbox reset may help, someone here will be along to tell us how it's done, then it learns to adapt to your driving style. I've got the 2015 model, AMG line, with the 7g box, and like you I was told I'd get over 50mpg, after a few trips I was struggling to get more than 40, so it went back in to the dealer, and I beleive their check is to drive the car at a steady 56 mph, reset the counter and see what the guage then says. They came back and told me they were getting the right sort of mpg level, and in the 2 years I've had it I've averaged 42mpg, including some very long motorway trips to southern Spain with the cruise control on 65mph. I very occasionall see over 50 on a mototrway run, but mostly around 46 to 48, again doing 70 on the cruise control. Now when I see over 42 mpg, I think I'm doing well. And I drive like an old f@rt!
 
I don't have an e220 so can't comment on their MPG but OP swapped a C-class and exchanged it for a larger heavier car with a similar engine (albeit newer tech). So I'm not surprised that he's not getting better MPG. Although 48MPG isn't bad for a nearly 2 ton car driven at 60-80MPG.

Also the MPG figures that manufacturers gave out were a joke hence the new real world (yet to be seen how "real world" they are) MPG calculations.
 
I had to go and pick up a client at Blenheim Palace yesterday in the S-Class which is a 2008 500 ( 5.5 ) 157,000 miles on the clock'

Had plenty of time no traffic so i set Distronic at 60 ( I didn't realise how slow 60 was, i had lorries overtaking me :( ) just to see what mpg i would get. M25 junction 10 M40 junction 8. 50 miles

32 mpg not bad for the old girl
 
It seems that the OP has left the conversation. Possibly too many facts that he did not like as they do not support his "argument"?

It's a tricky argument to be honest as MPG (as has shown in this discussion) varies and for a number of good reasons.

I've no doubt the salesman bigged up the economy of the new car but then I'd not take the word of a salesman as I suspect they learn their facts from the brochure. Realistically though, we all know that book figures and real life are very different. I'd consider a car the size of an E-Class that's capable of 50mpg+ to be a good result.

As mentioned the cooler weather definitely makes a difference. I noticed my E320 indicating an easy 53mpg on a run 65/70ish when the really warm weather arrived. Reality is more like 47mpg now.

Had a 2013 and 2016 C207 E220 coupes neither ever averaged more than 36 mpg ,driving like Miss Daisy I could get 55 mpg - but no “fun” in driving like that , might as well have bought a fiesta and got 65-70. My current C250 4matic is much the same mpg as the C207s, do I care - do I hell , just drive it and enjoy it.

I add ALL the fuellings and total Mileage travelled...and that's my actual fuel consumption, under all conditions and driving styles. And taking everything into account, I am happy with it. Its a big comfortable car.. a pleasure to drive. Its the 1st Merc that I owned, and has the E200 CDi engine...which is the smallest one. But I would imagine that bigger engine E Class would give better MPG...not (yet) having owned one, I can't confirm this, but I'm sure there are lots of people here on the forum who would have experience of it.

Why don't you just use fuelly.com?
 
The mpg delta is irrelevant against depreciation. Your C may have had eco tyres, but as per above posts laws of physics (weight) rule here.
 
I'd say a good service (if it hasn't been done already), check the tyre pressure and the fuel rating of the tyres you'd be suprised how much this can affect the MPG. Appoligies if you have done this.

I totally sympathise as it does sound like you were mislead whether the salesman knew he was doing it or not, and to be honest he should know what he is talking about not just read from the broucher and that is frustrating. Merc have said that 48mpg is a bit low so i would run with that and see if you can keep pushing them to look into it.

I also agree with everything Richard said as the fuel economy was a big part of your buying decision and if it was me i be extreamly peeved and the most irritating s*d in the world to that dealership until i either got what i was advised, compensated or my money back.

That's just me though a massively irritating s*d expecially when i'm mislead, lied to or the victim of plane ignorance :p

I have had my W213 E220 for almost 1 year and regularly see around 52 MPG at motorway speeds of 70 ish. At this speed the gearbox sits in 8th gear not 9th if left to its own devices. I have seen 64 MPG on several occasions but this was sitting at 60 for extended distances between speed average cameras. To be honest, although this is the newer 1950cc engine, my experience of the performance and fuel economy is very similar to that of my previous C220. To me that's all good given that it is a bigger, heavier car. I would also imagine that things may improve slightly as the engine is run in, as currently I'm only at 7000 miles. Some good advice on previous threads re tyre pressures etc.
