My boss who likes coloured pictures has seen a "dashboard! linked to several excel spreadsheets;

I think the analogy is if the measures facts & figures for any given aspect are Ok or not i.e. the "speedometer /oil guage / temp guage shows green" or indeed red.

in other words it a quick way to overview whats doing Ok and what needs work etc.

sorry if this is vague but any ideas anyone please ?

Ta

what facts and figures are you referring to? key performance indicators of the business?

I use a similar green/red dashboard 1 pager

iirc theres a function in excel somthing like:-

(IF Cell A1>= 100 THEN cell colour = #RED)(If cell A1 < 100 THEN cell colour = Green)

clunky - but i used it for somthing years ago...

He may have adapted an idea developed by Kaplan and Norton - known universally as the Balanced Scorecard.

Implementations via Excel are time consuming, resource hungry (manhours) difficult to exploit.

There are off the shelf packages that are SQL back end to a 'dashboard' presentation that allows the user to drill down to whichever data set has sparked an interest.

I know loads about the business side but not enough about the geeky implementation side. I introduced a system that used Access for the back end and it drove me up the wall!

In Excel use conditional formating. Its a lot quicker and simpler.

For Business Process Monitoring (giving you Real Time Information), could suggest a number of products, but essentially you need to be able to ensure they are measurable, and valid. You'd also look for a solution that presents different views to different areas. Eg, SQL Server failed - to the IT Dept. Payments Processing failed (which is the business process supported) - to the Ops Mgr. At risk £3m of payments - to the CEO.

Its not cheap to do, but can add real value - but it really depends on what you want to show in terms of business risk.

Clarky.

Thanks for that guys

Steve
