Greetings learned collegues .....

Right, i've got a multimeter, and i dont know how to use it ....

What setting should i use for 12v DC ?, also the red and black leads have plugs on them , on is marked COM, which is where the black resides i think , but the red can go in either of two .....

marked 10ADC or V(ohm sign)mA which do i use ?

Seems complicated ....

Hello... Writing on behalf of ady.. COM is the black or common wire and you will need to turn the dial to the volts section with the wavey line near it.. It probably wont have 12V so you use the nearest that is higher, more than likey it'll be 50V DC.

Cheers

Sorry to be ignorant , so which one is it ? none of them say 50 .... is the straight line on the left DC and the wavy line on the right AC ?

The black lead is COM for Common

The red lead goes in 10A DC when you want to measure current. Remember this is 10Amps MAX and goes in circuit - this is where most people manage to blow up there multimeters ;-)

The other Socket is for measureing Voltage & Resistance ( Ohms ). This is where you will want it for simply checking voltages.

As for setting I would disagree with Ady - A wavy sign usually signifies alternatiting current ( AC ). You are trying to measure Direct Current ( DC ) so you will need the other setting.
The scale you choose is unlikley to do any damage - it will simple read over the maximum, select one that is higher than 12volts.

Hope that helps ..........

Edit - You want the setting at about 10 OClock that says 20...

Kind Regards

G
