Multiple Issues

E220
Hi

I have a 204 E220 CDi with 130,000 miles on the clock that I have had for just over 2 years now and have started having issues with it in the past month.

Initially, I started having issues with the lights coming on randomly flashing when the car was parked up 1 night and the battery then dying on me. Took it to the garage who tested the batteries and said the auxiliary battery was pretty much dead and the main battery was not great so I got both batteries replaced. 1 issue left from this was a 'Brake Service - Visit Workshop' message in white whenever I started the car but the garage said it was fine to drive and I could get them to look into that properly in a few weeks soI had a chance to clear the 1st bill before getting more work done!

Drove it for the next couple of days fine and then had no need to drive it for 2 days. When I went to drive it next, the battery was totally dead so called the garage who came to collect it and take it back for more tests. 1 thing they noticed is even though they had to jump start it, the water in the washers when they sprayed them before taking it was warm. Eventually after a few days of letting it run to isolate the cause, they determined it was a faulty SAM board under the bonnet so I had to have that replaced.

When I collected it, they said there were 2 new warning messages when starting the car 'ABS Defective - Visit Workshop' & 'ESP Defective - Visit Workshop' which were being caused by the SBC unit reaching it's inbuilt limit but that it was still safe to drive and although they hadn't done it before, they had read up that you can get the unit refurbished instead of replaced as replacing costs more than my car is worth! As they hadn't done it before so couldn't give me a price, I decided to find a garage who has done it before.

After driving it for a few days, I noticed that the ABS and ESP warning messages disappeared. However, they came back on whilst driving home tonight and as soon as they appeared, the speedometer dropped to 0 and stayed there and it felt like the car wouldn't drop into 1st gear too as the revs were really high when pulling away from any junction. Once I stopped the car and turned the engine off, the speedo and gears were fine when I started the car again.

The final part of the above paragraph seems to me unlikely to be anything to do with the SBC pump so I am thinking either I am very unlucky and have 2 possibly major issues again straight after my SAM board being replaced, or there is possibly a bigger underlying issue (maybe electrics related) that is causing all of this. Having spent £1100 on the car in the last month, I don't want to just take it to a garage with a blank cheque to fix it given it is only worth about £2,000 but I also don't want to scrap it so soon after spending that amount of money.,

I am planning to take it to a Mercedes specialist later this week to have the diagnostic scanner run on it, but any suggestions to possible cause or cost would be appreciated.

I am assuming 2004 ?? E220 CDI when you mention SBC brakes. Most of your symptoms could be explained by a global voltage drop somewhere caused by some sort of drain to earth. You need to get the car to a specialist with STAR who knows how to use it before throwing any more money at it. First check might be- is the alternator charging adequately?? Are any of its diodes faulty causing a drain to earth?

Mine has done it too.First it shows 2 messages in white "ESP , ABS".Then after a month or two the horror red warning comes on.The car doesn't pull any more than 50km/h and the brake pedal goes in the end.Replaced the SBC + ESP units and all sorted.

How much did that cost you?

Yes, 2004. Have got it booked in at MBS Mercedes in Exeter this afternoon so fingers crossed they will have a diagnosis later and I can decide if the cost is worthwhile or not.

So the ABS/EPS/Brake Warning messages are being caused by the SBC unit as expected. The speedo and gears issue are being caused by a faulty rear speed sensor.

I'm planning to just keep using the car until the SBC related warnings go from white to red as I can't justify spending the money it would cost to replace that unit, so I am reluctant to fork out £200-£300 replacing the faulty sensor given that the SBC issue could make it undrivable soon after.

So I have a couple of queries about the SBC unit that I forgot to ask at the time:

- I know there is no exact figure, but does anyone have experience of how long/how many miles I may get out of the car before the SBC messages turn from white to red?
- Once they go red, is it a case of literally pull over there and then or can you complete your journey as long as you drive carefully bearing in mind the messages?

Mine does 400-500 miles when the red appears in dash.Do not replace that sensor.Thats not the fault , it's SBC fault. How much told you to pay for SBC +ESP unit ??

The diagnostic report said:

C146E - Check Rear Left Speed Sensor
C149D - One or more speed sensors implausible
C2472 - Rear Left Speed sensor

and

C249F Operating time of component A7/33 SBC Unit.

I was told at least £1,000 to replace the SBC unit which I can't justify given the value of the car and money already spent on it last month so plan to just use it until I can't anymore to give me as long as possible to save towards a new car.

These sensor are related to SBC . 1000 £ For a used one or new??

We didn't get that far into the conversation. They said at least £1000 which also ties in with what I was told by the garage I had the other work done at, and what I have seen when looking online for answers and that is way too much for me to spend on it.

That code should give you the option of resetting the timer (number of brake pedal actuations) and no need for a new pump. You need to find an indy with Star who is willing to do this for you.
