Sorry, haven't been here for a while hence my late response.
Thanks for your kind words about my car. It's an unusual colour combination (Magnetite black with Alpaca leather) but it's what I wanted. And being unusual also makes it special in my eyes.
I went for petrol because I hate diesels with a vengance! Yes I know they're far better now than even just a few years ago, but I'd still not want one. Many of my neighbours have newish diesels and they all rattle like a bag of nails when starting up; a sound that seriously offends my engineer's ears. Not so bad for the driver cosseted inside, but I'm different in that I think about others. Many a time I've been blasted with black smoke from diesels (usually commercial vehicles admitedly) and that puts me off too. I once had a nearly new diesel as a loan car whilst mine was in for a service - I had to keep the windows closed to cut down on the rattling noise and I couldn't see much behind me because of the black smoke.
Something else with diesels that may have improved is the smell of the fuel. Whenever I've had the misfortune to have to put diesel into a car I've been left with the smell on my hands until I've been able to wash them. And it seemed to permeate into the car for a few minutes too.
It's all a matter of what you get used to I know, but I much prefer the flatter torque band of a petrol engine. People talk about the kick they get from a diesel, but that's just an impression of speed that it's imparting, and only briefly. For me, the smooth, steady long-lived thrust through a much greater rev range is far more reassuring and satisfying. (My wife says much the same thing
)
Finally fuel consumption. I'm now retired so don't have a daily commute that's burning up the miles, so I don't have to worry so much about mpg. Anyway, MPP would be a more appropriate comparison. Miles Per Pound would be closer between diesel and petrol because diesel fuel costs more. I can get close to 40mpg on a run with my C350 CGI, but I don't really care. I get far more pleasure from flicking on the Sport button and pressing that right pedal hard.
