My 'cheap' High Mileage W211 E55 AMG Project

Lovely work! Don’t google about oil pump pick up tube O rings, or you’ll stop sleeping at night…

I did…

Thanks, I hadn't seen this. A quick google shows a oil pressure take off on the front of the engine, I might see if I have a fitting to check. At this mileage and age I'm prepared for anything!

I was going to say earlier, awesome mancave, very clean and tide too 👌 😀

Thanks, unfortunately don't get to spend as much time in there as I'd want. I need to shuffle cars around so this has a full time spot.

I was going to put on the cost and labour/hours but I probably spend longer cleaning and greasing than the job actually takes.

Thanks

In that case it's bullet proof. Can't remember without going to my files but mine has had at least 2 each of atf, rear diff and gearbox lube. These aren't expensive and I think MB schedule them too far apart. My engine is mildly mapped to 502bhp and 770nm torque . + vmax derestrict.
Gone into my files. For my CLS55, M-B schedule a diff oil change at 10k then every 30k. ATF change scheduled at 1st 40k only then no more. No schedule for S/C oil.
I've done diff every 30k and ATF at 40k and 80k.

According to my information there is no service required for the supercharger. I'm going to change the oil on mine. Easy enough job if you take your time. It's hard to get small quantities of the special oil at the right price. Only need 150 mil.
You're right, according to MB 'they're sealed for life' but I changed mine anyway on the 32. Make sure you wear disposable gloves and be prepared for the stench of the used oil !
I bought a small tin of the oil and gave the rest (about 90%) of it to my Indi to use for other customers. It's not something that I'll need to do again.

Fab thread, just my cuppa tea. OP, is this project for keeping or selling? Just being nosy.
Looks like a labour of love to me…
No profit to be made on a car like this!
Plenty of smiles to be had though :) No worries about putting miles on the thing!

Great thread!! Re tear boot leak, oull back the left hand boot liner fabric whrre all thr audio units Are housed. In behind there is a big retangular shaped vent with a seal... on the rear quarter panel ..
that fails commonly . They are cheap and relatively easy replace

Excellent thread that as a previous E55 owner has my interest.
I'd say you got a bargain and the car is in pretty good nick for its mileage.

Great thread, and a testament to the strength of the Mercedes M113 engines.. (with a nod to poor.. O rings - Jobsworth! ;) )I enjoy reading threads about high mileage low price AMGs.. kudos on your purchase.. I was amazed to see the boot floor was an insert part .. It helps with a purchase like this when you can do some of the work yourself, a thing I try to do when I can.
I look forward to reading more of your ownership experience.
It's a mental block for most to buy a car over 100k miles.. more so over 200k..
Great buy it seems..

Love reading threads like this........buying and running high mileage cars (and motorcycles) and DIYing everything except tyre balancing and paint has been most of my car owning life! Far more satisfying and educational than the few times I've owned new ( or close to new ) cars/bikes. And you don't have kittens worrying about what's happening to it when its parked out of sight or at the supermarket!!!
Good luck with the old girl.

Thanks for the info, it's good to know!

I'll probably end up keeping it, it's never going to be worth much given the mileage. I think it must be one of the best BHP/£ cars.

Thanks for this, I checked it this evening and got the air line around the vent.

I would be Curios to know if your SBC unit is the original one.. ?

I'm sure I saw a receipt for a replacement when the car was relatively new, I need to check up on this.

Thanks for all the interest so far, I thought people would think I was mad.
Latest Fix:

I encountered my first 'Malfunction' which turned out to be self made. An 'SRS Fault Visit Workshop' come on today, a quick scan shows 9243 'The resistance value in the ignition circuit containing component R10/10 (Front passenger side airbag ignition squib) is too high.'

A quick google showed the connector under the seat is a common issue or potentially a connector in the foot well. The back of this seat was held on with a cable tie so I assumed someone had been in here before. I removed this and followed the wire down, all looked ok here. A quick look under the seat revealed the other end of this cable no longer plugged into anything and a similar shaped connector next to it also disconnected. I forgot to take any pictures due to the excitement of a quick fix. Just to note anyone with a similar fault, you need to clear the faults with a computer, ignition cycle will not clear the SRS code. Once connected, everything on the SRS module passed with no faults. I had moved the seat forwards and backwards several times while cleaning and fixing the back seat, it must of caught on the frame! I've outlined the harness and connector in a red box for anyone reading this with the same fault. £Free cost with computer

Managed to tidy this up much better and replace the two screws at the bottom which holds it in place.

A quick check of the vent to make sure all was dry.

Thanks for reading, will update how the test goes on Friday!

Another way of cheking if seal is leaking...the pink/beige mat /sound proofing that sits underneath the Nav DVD unit may be wet...on my own car is was a very small leak but it was getting in and then running down the side panels and into boot floor

Whilst your deep in the boot area, you might want to check the fuel pump relay, which is on the off side behind side panel. My boot had been letting in water for some time through the third high level brake light and number plate panel, consequently the boot area was getting very hot and humid, I ended up rewiring and replacing relay after intermittent crank no starts, I also checked both connectors at the pumps under rear seats, they were in perfect condition. You’ve got an 03 like myself, so the relay should be in the same position.

Thanks for this, I will investigate to see how mine is.

Good news today!

Passed the test with no advisories.

Impressions after the second drive, very comfortable and it really moves!

Not so good news, there's a fuel leak. I'm not sure if it still around the plastic ring or coming from the pump, need to investigate further.

Excellent news. Enjoy driving it 👍🏻

Further investigation today on the fuel leak, looks like in my panic to stop petrol leaking everywhere (car was sat on jack stacks throwing fuel to one side, bad idea!) I didn't get the seal in fully. I removed the ring slowly and could see the seal was caught up. I also had a closer look at the wiring, not great! I repaired best I could but ideally I'd like to replace this section of loom. Second attempt on the seal/ring went much smoother. I left the car running for 10 minutes and all was dry, pump sounds ok and no smell of petrol. Next test will be to take it out and see if the fuel moving around is creating the leak. £Free (some electrical tape and time to reseat the seal)

Next issue to address was the oil leak, the worst seems to be coming from around the oil filler cap. Removing the valve cover is relatively straight forward and access is good. Unfortunately I noticed a crack in the breather section. The last person in here has sealer everywhere, so unevenly spread it wasn't actually sealing. I'm not sure if this crack was here before or not, hopefully I can find a replacement soon to get all back together! If anyone has a M113 cover A1130160205 please send me a DM. The good news is everything inside the cover looks clean and good for 230k.

I'm half thinking of painting the valve covers while they're off, not sure if red would be too much, maybe a fresh silver would look more OEM?

Thanks!
