My front badge star

I think that's the star that's used in Distronic equipped cars.....!

I'd quite like to fit the same to my CLS..purely for cosmetic purposes (no Distronic fitted)....either that or I fancy an illuminated star...problem is trying to get the right diameter details as they seem to vary a lot......p'raps someone here can help !!!

Hi all
I'm thinking of dull the badge down a bit and thought if the tint for tail lights/headlamps if you know what I mean?
Question is any sensors in the star badge?
If I go stick a vynal tint on will it effectively mess up anything? ?
Cheers:thumb:

I quite like that too, and have been looking into the matter ... unfortunately, mine is an old type, 130mm star, and most, if not all, illuminated ones come in 180mm diameter.

I believe the same is true for the glass Distronic star.

Perhaps slight variations in diameter for eBay, et al, listings due to how the measurement is taken - some include the outer trim, etc, etc.

There are certainly sensors behind the glass - that's basically the reason for it being there, but without knowing how the data is processed, it would be impossible to answer your question: for example, Mercedes must have some algorithm implemented to compensate for a dirty glass surface, whether that means your can tint it, I'm not sure. If there's some comparative light sensing going on between other sensors (not behind the grille star), which is more than likely, tinting the star will mess it up, as it would expect the star sensors to reset to "clean" position at some point? This is pure speculation, of course.

On other models, the plastic dome indicates sensors are behind there, usually distronic which is radar guided cruise control. I noticed that an A-class in the MB showroom had the same plastic dome, and pondered what might be behind it.

The worst that can happen is you have to buy a new one, so price one up and check availability before you tint it and you'll be ready if the worst does happen.

Firstly are there any wires going to it, that will tell you if it has sensors / radar in there.
Secondly I thought distronic worked on radar rather than light reflection so I would of thought that it would not react adversely to a tint.

Do you know I never thought of that lol.
Cheers I'll have a look see if their is any wire etc:thumb:

This is the tint I was thinking of using, it's called chromalux I think or something like that
I should be able to peel it off if it misses any sensors up.
Going stick it on later I'll post some picys up and let you know if the sensors still work OK?
Cheers for the replys :thumb:

The Distronic badge from a W215 is identical size wise to the W219 Grille so will slot straight in. I purchased a oem Distronic star from a seller in the US iirc it was £150 after taxes, I have it in a OEM AMG Grille fortunately I found one used on this forum for £80 had it painted and it's like new.

MB want over £350 for a W219 AMG Grille no star included!

Imo it freshens the front of the car up nicely keeping in period.

Apologies op for going off topic.

No problem MWCLS bet that looks mint can you post a picture up of it if possible please.

Just been mesiuring up that tint I have on the badge and second thoughts is it might look a bit tacky.
Think I'll try just a dark tint instead

That's very nice see what you mean by setting your car off.
That looks the part with the all black grill as well.
Mint mate
