Driving home last evening, the engine on my car switched off, managed to get to the side of the road, but the car would not start. Called out RAC and when they arrived............................... youv'e guessed the car started. Later that evening I had to go out and the car would not start so left it on my drive. This morning, thought I would try the car and it started. So, arranged to take the car to MB to get it checked and while driving through a little village called Wick in South Gloucestershire, the car died on me three times in a space of about 500 yards. This time I called MB breakdown, they sent a pick up lorry and my car is now at MB and I am waiting for the news on what is wrong. By the way, when it was unloaded off the truck at MB it started:confused: . I will let you know what transpires.

It senses the crankshaft

lol

It measures TDC and therefore RPM.

Without that signal the car will not run.

That's the great thing about this forum. Within 3 minutes of posting a query, the OP has 2 independant and consistent answers as to what is problem is.

Faults on cars fall into groups the same as in other consumables, providing the original post is comprehensible its part of a pattern.

I got a warning light and took mine in, was told crank sensor had failed and they then work from the cam sensor instead - is that a W211 thing?

I do not think that they can run from the camshaft sensor as the main signal would be missing.

The sensor is fitted to every car for years. Without the TDC info the engine cannot start as nothing knows what to do

have had the same problem on a c240 and a clk320, the crank shaft sensot needs to cool down and then will start again, hence why the car would strat after it had cooled off for a while.

:) Thanks for making me smile (far too much pain to laugh) :)

Regards
John

Hope you are better soon John!
On our race car we have two crankshaft sensors such is the the confidence in this component. The driver can switch to the alternative from the dash and it forms part of our 'pre-flight' to ensure that this happens with just a small h-hesitation as the electronics sync:(

Update, again this forum and members on it are spot on, it was the crank shaft sensor, however, it did not show up as a fault on diagnostic.

But then you have the possibility of failure of the change over electronics........;)

I wish my car had been fitted with two bodyshells so I could change over the rusty one at the flick of a switch.

It's called risk assessment!
In our case it's essential that the car returns to the pits using only the driver 'and the tools carried on board'.
The idea of a shell change is an interesting one, but I doubt it could be done without the car coming to a halt.....;)
Crank sensors not showing up as a fault is quite typical of the intermitant failure mode of these parts. Least they are not silly expensive, although I have never bought an MB branded one!
