Need to check for 300ce immobiliser.

Hi All

I have just purchased a lovely black '92 300CE-24 Sportline coupe which I am absolutely smitten with. It only cost me £3000, which I think is a bargain even with 136k miles. It had one other owner and full service history and is in very good condition.

Before this fine machine I had an older 1986 260E, which I was also very pleased with. Unfortunately it was stolen outside my house in August. It was never recovered, so after wrangling with my insurers for a couple of months (Elephant - others be warned), I got some money back and bought this coupe.

My question is, how can I check if it has an immobiliser? What do I look for?

Also, the head of the automatic seat belt presenter has broken and I need a replacement, can anyone tell me the best place to get one?

Thanks!

Jon

A bullet-shaped plastic thing hanging off the keyring would usually suggest some kind of aftermarket immobiliser.

Sp!ke would probably know, personally I think the presenter is a nice idea but WHY OH WHY did they make it out of cheapo plastic? It wears away as the seatbelt rubs against it and it sits in the sunshine all day so is prone to cracking/splitting etc. Bad design IMHO! Give me some time and I will check out the parts catalogue for the part number, although beware it is probably expensive from the stealership and will be a pain to install I imagine!

My friend Bloodmoon has a 300CE-24, his driver's presenter has cracked because of belt-wear and someone has glued it up with something resin-like!

I reckon a custom-made item from aluminium or something would be cool ;)

Hey Shude

Thanks for the quick reply. I have something on the keyring that is like a stubby tube about 7mm in diameter with jagged edges and a notch. Not sure if that is it.

The presenter has cracked. I guess I can fix it with some plastic resin as a short term fix (superglue doesn't do it), but the actual head slides off fairly easy and looks like it's meant to be replaceable, so I was hoping to replace it.

I'll phone a couple of Merc garages up and see what they say.

Also, does anyone know of a good bodyshop place to get some rust spots fixed?

Cheers

Jon

The seat belt presenter triangle bit is £5 at your local stealership - just buy a new one. :bannana:

Careful when you fit it mind... you have to undo the seat belt anchor to fit it and the spring loaded mechanism is a bit of a pain to re-tension. You have been warned!!!! When you are fed up and get stuck, PM me and I'll tell you how to do it. :)

As for the imobiliser, its unlikely to be insurance approved but you could check with your stealership to see if it was fitted by MB. (They just need your chassis number) Failing that, lift up the passenger front carpet and open the big black plastic cover in the footwell and see whats inside. This is the usual place for alarm/imobilisers on the W124's and often there's a hidden override switch down there somewhere. (shhh)

Cheers Sp!ke

I'll have a chat with the local stealership, as you say, and I'll have a look out for the immobiliser.

By the way (to all), when I mentioned about a good bodyshop to repair rust spots, I'm in the NE London area.

Jon

I have the same on mine. Inside the glove box on the left hand side you will find a socket that said stubby bit fits into, its an imobaliser

Thanks All

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Sp!ke - that is one awesome car you have there. The bodywork looks immaculate.

The retractable badge - how much does that cost? Do you know anyone who can fit it?

Also, out of interest, how much did the spray job cost you in Croatia? I need some 'trolly dings' done too - any idea where and how much?

Cheers Ian

That sounds very useful - I shall check that out tomorrow morning (this morning?)

And Tone - yep I am absolutely thrilled. So fantastic to drive, even if the trips to the petrol station make my wallet tremble with fright!
