Need to Understand W numbers

A W113 always was a W113 - Mercedes added the R designation for the following SL and also referred to them as W107s - some people therefore refer to W113s as R113s where technically they only existed as W113s.

I will find a MB literature sourced reference for a W208 for you - no offence but you're one employee in a multi national corporation - this forum is full of threads about people being told one thing by a MB employee - only to discover the truth lies elsewhere ;).

As I said above :

If the correct code for a Series 113 roadster is R113 then it is a R113.

Perhaps I should have expanded that to clarify that if the correct code is W113 then it is a W113. My point is that you can't rename models because you would prefer it to be something else.

I am not surprised to see that on an enthusiast site, before I joined DCUK I thought all models (including the Series 208) started with W but soon found that it was not the case.

Sadly I can't link to 'Infonet' (the DCUK Dealer Information System) which produced only 2 results for a search on 'W208' neither of which had anything to do with the previous model CLK. Predictably searches for 'C208' or'A208' produced numerous results that did relate to the previous model CLK.

No offence taken and as you point out I am only one employee out of about 300,000. However, it is part of the work I do to understand the correct model codes for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

As I said - DC have / are phasing out a lot of the original designations - part numbers are superceeded and now not recognised despite still being provided with the 'lost' part number stamped (obviously tooling changes are more expansive than sticking a new label on something ;)) When I went to the Stuttgart MB Museum for an audio recording session I distinctly remember having a CLK GTR wheeled out and the literature identifying it as a W208 - though I suppose it's not really a C208 or A208 either!

What DC do now doesn't necessarily reflect on what they did 'then' if you see what I mean?

On a seperate note it's good to see a DC employee who actually cares about their job - I could count the good ones on one hand unfortunately :o

After the cuts that were forced on DCUK this week I reckon soon you will be able to count the good and the bad ones on one hand.

Actually that car should have a separate model number as, if I recall correctly, the CLK GTR was a road version of a racing car which was built with a carbon fibre chassis and has only a visual link to the 'proper' CLK.
