New 1995 R129 sl320 owner...

Lube throttle linkage @ the TB, often missed when serviced but stops the jerky throttle control @ low speeds.

As an aside I had this with mine but lube didn't resolve it. Turned out to be the throttle cable - apparently it comes into the pedal box at a very slight angle, so the outer eventually wears on one side. Odd, but an easy/cheap fix.

Hey Dude! Good to see a fresh pair of eyes on a 129. They are pretty robust cars - I have a rust free 96 500 with 100k more that yours on the clock, although it hasn't been used much for the last few years due to storage problems and indecision about ownership!

Whilst going the preventative route, it would be an idea to give the wiper mechanism a clean and lube, as I doubt it's been used much?

By the way, whereabouts are you? I bought a second hand Watling towbar for mine years ago, but never fitted it.

...Thanks for the helpful advice and given we have 1995 SL320s if you have any other advice for me or issues to look for I would be very grateful...and yours looks fabulous in silver and reminds me of why I prefer the angular original shape.
Enjoy your day.

Check flex discs, the front fails 1st and makes a right old mess when it goes. :D

...today's fiddling, wet passenger footwell so checked drain on the wing near ecu and blocked! Water then poured out under the car once cleaned with a metal coat hanger...inside I removed the black cover (passenger side up under the dash) and some more water escaped! Will leave to dry out and all should be
well ?
Cleaned and protected the hood courtesy of Autoglym and noticed a 3-4mm crack at the midway between the 2 smaller side windows...not there yesterday...popped a little silicone sealant in...also peeled back some of the insulation...round twist plug on air intake (no damage and wires flexible) small hot wire plug ( dry but ok with no visible damage despite 1mm of core showing on one cable at plug end,out with a blob of silicone sealant!) So looks like whilst I shall need to change the loom it isn't absolutely falling apart? Just needs to get me until the winter...
Will order some refurbished wheels this week as mine are shabby in places ,have full exterior paintwork valet booked and put money aside for rear windows!
Also need front brake pads (set of punches ordered) any suggestions?

In Devon...would you be interested in selling it? I could arrange and pay for a courier?

And hope all is well with you...

Ps - how does one lube the wiper mechanism?

...what's a flex disc? Do you mean the flexi pipe to the front calipers? Thank you...

Check that the boot/door lock can be unlocked manually with the key blade.

The flex discs are the prop shaft rubber donuts, get the car in the air and inspect for cracking. My rear one looked okay, the front one shot. If they fail while driving they can make a right mess of things. MOT didn't pick up on it, but it failed a couple of months later @ 80mph on an autoroute. (a couple of yrs ago)

The wiring looms that are affected are
1) A/C fans
2) Lower engine harness (starter, oil pressure, oil level)
Easy enough to do yourself

Sileck did these two for me
3) Upper engine harness (Injectors, coils, temp sensors, cam position sensor, variable cam timing, variable intake valve)
4) Throttle body.

Check around the front of the engine, take the black cover off, if these show signs of deterioration the rest will be fubared. (try not to disturb them) Mine had good wires to the coils, looked like in the past someone had spliced new wires into the rotten loom.

The Air Mass meter (by the air box) is not affected, I checked all the other looms in the engine bay, they were all okay.

My car wasn't misbehaving, I regarded it as preventative maintenance. The car's a keeper and used for long distances and holidays so I like it to be as good as I can get it.

If you haven't a record of fluid changes do all these, gearbox included. The other thing that seems to require replacement at this age is the fan clutch. If the car overheats in traffic it's your 1st suspect.

Enjoy, tinkering is 1/2 the fun and helps you bond with it. :D

Thanks for this really helpful advice....Will arrange an inspection of the flexi discs and also check the boot lock...and gearbox oil was recently changed and the engine temp is 80 ish most of the time and fans currently working to control the temperature and coolant was checked and confirmed okay...Take care...

...boot lock and door locks working fine.

Yes, I could be, unless you are in a desperate rush to buy? It's buried deep in one of two garages! I'm next door in Dorset, so we could even possibly meet up?

As for the wiper mechanism, I'm no mechanic. The single arm mechanism would need to be removed, cleaned and lubed. I have a low mileage 124, and whilst caught in rain on a long journey the mechanism stiffened, which burnt the wiper motor out. A short sighted lack of maintenance, but I never intentionally use the car in the wet.

...not a desperate hurry and meeting up ,perhaps halfway, on a sunny day if we ever get one would work for me...Best wishes and please pm me when you are ready.Thank you.

Watch this space! You need a post count of 30 to be able to send/receive pms, btw.

...okay,thank you and a quick way to record another post ! Take care.

...I now have 30 posts ! I can officially speak with my fellow members...

...this evening with the help of a flexible Bosche camera I inspected both prop shaft flexi couplings and they show no wear at all...that is to say no evidence of cracking around the bolts or rubber...however also revealed that the timing cover on the front left (head on to the engine) is weeping/leaking as suspected and there is a brown oil stain ( not a weep or leak) just at the corner of the head on the right hand rear nearest the bulkhead ... oh and whilst a specialist Mercedes Indy changed the gearbox oil and filters it appears that they might have reused the original gasket as the sump is wet although dry above...
Great things these little cameras..

All sounds good. :)
The gearbox maybe something or nothing. I'd give it a really good clean, and take another look, after getting it thoroughly hot. If you wipe it with a paper towel fresh ATF will look red. Keep an eye out for spots of fluid (you'll see some clear water though, the A/C drains above the gearbox)
