W211 E270 CDI
Hello everyone,

Maybe a dumb@ss question but if I change my gearbox on my '03 W211 E270 CDI does anything need to be done to the ECU, i.e remap or something to marry up the new unit or is it a case of a swap for the correct box?

Sorry if it's a silly question but I don't know... :dk:

Thanks Merc people..

I am no expert but my guess would you will have to get someone with STAR (mercedes diagnostics) to link up the ecu of the engine with the ecu of the gearbox.

Anyone else got any input?

I really need help with this guys please.

I can't be doing without a car.

As above the new unit will need to be coded to the car. Also highly advisable to get a filter and oil change for the box which I'm sure will be standard practice when it's dropped!

Is it a five speed auto. The 5G tronic is similar to the 7G Tronic - they have a control module built into the box bolted onto the Valve assembly. If you put in another box without changing over your old control module, you will need to code the unit.

From what I can understand you need to virginalize the new control and then code it to your car. It would save you a load of time (assuming that the old box has a good valve assembly and control module) to swap them over - you car wouldn't know any better.

As said I'd take the opportunity to properly drain the box, torque converter, filter and flush out the oil cooler - needs to be done in very clean conditions and fill your new converter with about a litre of oil.

Also when refitting be very careful to make that the torque converter is properly home. This is a bit tricky on these boxes and if you get it wrong you could nail the oil pump. I think the 5 speed TC sits further back than the 7 speed but you'll find the specs online. Use a metal ruler across the housing to measure the correct inset / alignment for the converter.

Load of rubbish, fit it and off you go.
