New Car!

I meant its progress as a 2.2 4clyinder performs better than 2.75cylinder in a heavier car.

How does it compare to BMW's 4 clyinder diesel?

Its very similar to the 520d. They both pull well and mpg is on par with one another. Horses for courses really between the two.

Ive got the 520d this week to drive after the e220 cdi last week and i must admit it would really only be down to money between the two , there isnt much else to pick holes in. except the cupholders are better in the 5 series.

:D It's funny you say that about the cupholders! I was thinking exactly that this afternoon after grabbing a coffee and settling back into the E Class!

At the moment, cost wise the list price / P11D value of the W211 is much lower than the BMW - however as it's emissisons are higher I believe it becomes liable to a higher tax burden - think it's 25% BIK for the E versus 20% for the BMW.

I'm a Merc man at heart, that's what seems to be making this a much tougher decision...

They're an blooming option on the E class....I don't use them (as I don't have them) but if they are that close (as the 520d is a very well regarded car) then the E220cdi (facelift) must be good. Guess it comes down to money and that awful company car tax system to pick one over the other.

I assume the 520d is a 6speed auto, and the E220cdi is on a 5speed. Is there any transmissions advantages over one or the other.

@ Next GTG you should try mine and see how the newer engine compares to the old. It would be interesting to hear

I used to have a 150 E220 CDI in my 2003 W211. The 150 always a little underpowered and lacking sometimes , the 170 just seems to take it in its stride. Its good.

The 5 speed vs 6 speed box . can't really tell the difference TBH.

How come the change of mind. The 204 is a really nice car don't get me wrong, but would have rather had a 211, especially as they represent such good value. Suppose a 211 alongside a E60 a bit much.

However, right colour combo, and nice spec. Still can't see how they can charge for cupholders. I might have added tinted windows but it sounds nice :)

its a long story, ill tell you when youre older.

Im happy with the C instead of the E tho. Can really tell where the technology has gone leaps and bounds.

I've been in a 204 (albiet with a stinking hangover as a passenger). It feels more modern etc but mechanically its the same engine + tranmission thats in the facelift 211. In the lighter car it will be rapid and give you're 211 320cdi a run for its money.

I just like the cars bigger thats all :o

BTW have you seen I've amended the time of Mays GTG. Hope this suits.

I would love a car the size of the C Class but with the refinement of the S Class.
The S is only about 10% longer and probably only about 10% more refined, but those small increments can make a massive perceived difference!

Great choice, the W204 with that spec would be nice. Not entirely sure on the colour choice, don't get me wrong it looks fantastic now not convinced how long the white trend will last...

I was originally looking for a black one , but this one was coming through and had what i was looking for.

I really liked the white when i saw it in the showroom and will be a nice change to go back to white ( my first two W202's were white) Will be nice to have a car that doesnt look instantly dirty like black.

Ill see how it goes , its on a PCP . Worst comes to the worst with the popularity of it come resale its MB Finance that needs to find it a new home. But i like it :) Normally a solid colour is marked down for residual value calculations but white seems to be bucking the trend and is classed as being worth as much as a metallic colour and ive saved £605 which pays for the HK audio system.

I think if they did airmatic in a C320 CDI it would give the S320 a good run for its money .

So going for white pays for the HK sound system.....I could be persuaded for those reasons! Function over form!
I wonder if the new E class will get to S refinement levels with Airmatic? The current E is close but you really notice the difference after over three hours behind the wheel.:o

Nah, the 212 won't.

1. The seats in the 221 are much nicer, the car is heavier so will defeat bumps better and the S class is set up purely for luxury. The E is set up differently with more of an emphasis on driver involvement and practicality.

2. MB wouldn't engineer the new E to be more luxurious than the S. It would take sales away from the more expensive car.

3. Just look @ the 212. I've got this weeks autocar and even with the new claims of solidity I don't like it.

Swap you for a week then :) we can both do a write up.

Ahh, that makes more sense, as a PCP it's not really you're worry. As you say white appears to be popular right now, plus the HK system makes it worth while. As you've got the AMG kit you'll pull it off, white on a base model doesn't seem to work. Even saw a white W221 which looked sweet.

Our company doesn't allow us to specify white...
