I'm still weighing up the option of leasing a new E class, as I'm new to leasing privately I would appreciate views on the following.

Using prices on contract hire and leasing's website as a baseline price for a personal contract hire, I think the following is a good deal:

E250 CDI AMG Sport Auto, 3+35, 10K pa, £1077 down then £299 per month incl VAT, with Optimum Ltd. (No options required for me against this model). There are other offers similar prices, but 6+35.

My current car is worth £7k, trade price, so should be achievable. Therefore £1-2K deposit, the remainder back to me or to fund the new car for the first 2 years.

Alternatively E350 (E250 £1K less) are approx £20K for a 59 plate 50k mile car on MB Retail Used.
£2K deposit and £18K financed over 5 years is £358 p/m with Tesco finance. I pay the road tax, warranty expires after a year, and higher servicing costs due age and mileage. I would also be looking to change the car before the 5 year finance was completed.

If my logic is correct would anyone buy the 59 plate car for more per month than a new more efficient, cheaper to operate, latest model etc.

I contacted MB Retail Used and their finance was even higher than I could achieve privately as they have to charge 10% APR.

I wouldn't buy the used car based on your figures.

Have a look at a new E Class.

Some of the deals they offer at present are fantastic.

Have you got a firm quote for that E250 at that price, I'm in the same market albeit looking for an estate, and the best 3+35 I've had is more than £100 more expensive? Is it for a new model car and not just an ad. My experience seems to be that a lot of the seemingly good deals evaporate when you actually try and place an order.

Your conundrum though is a no-brainer. The lease wins hands down IMO.

It isn't a firm quote, as I'm not that far down the road yet. This is for a saloon, and estates are approx £100 more per month. If you go to contract hire and leasing you can tailor your search, the quote is for a new car and new model. AMG Sport E250 CDI seems to be the same as SE E220 auto, I assume they're shifting stock?

Is the Sport a manual ?

The difference in retail price for a manual sport and auto SE are very similar.

What's the spec of the cars regarding facelift ?

Is one the facelift and the other the previous version ?

The E250 CDI is auto only now. You can only get the E220 CDI in manual.

Apart from the obvious "face", Comand, DAB, Parktronic and Park Assist are all standard on the new model. Metallic is included with AMG Sport trim too. Therefore lease prices are better as you don't need to hit the options list too heavily (none in my case, this car has everything I need / want).

Thanks. I've been using that site as well. I was using it to compare prices against Ling's Cars which always seem to be well priced and her price for a 220SE was coming out at £351/month but she didn't list a 250SE which is the engine I want so I got a bespoke quote for that and it came out at £439.

When I checked what a 220 would actually be that, too, had miraculously climbed from the advertised £351 to £406.

This seems to be the way when you follow up an ad; I've done a few over the last week or so and "That deal has just gone" or "Oh, they're last month's prices" are common refrains.

I'm seriously tempted by a low rate on the last of the pre-facelifts. I do prefer the new one but their are some cracking deals to be had on stock ones at the moment.

I ordered my facelift 220 SE auto Estate last month from Neva Consultants in East Sussex. 3+23 £375 including VAT on 15K per year. Price for saloon and estate were the same. Sport £20ish more. I've used them for years now and can highly recommend them. Deals do come and go though..that is the norm I'm afraid, they come from the finance companies, not the brokers.

Thats odd.
I have just ordered a new E220 Auto :D did you mean the AMG is only manual?

OP - have a look at Freedom Contracts, and give them a ring ;)

The main disadvantage with leasing is you're a bit stuffed if your circumstances change. ie if your mileage goes up a lot then the excess charges will be significant, or if you need to get out of the lease then you typically have to pay 90% of the outstanding charges (but if you bought a car and then had to sell under 'distress' then you could get a pretty poor price).

Some people have had bad experiences at the end of leases with damage charges.

Not really.
If you do the maths on the monthly cost of a higher mileage lease versus paying the excess, I have found out it works exactly the same over the term. Its more sensible in that case to take the lower option and top up, rarther than overestimate and pay for mileage you dont use.

If you put more miles on your own car then its no different where depreciation is concerned.
Except that it is also even harder to sell to boot in a highly difficult market.

So was I.
Until I looked hard at three things:

1. The new basic spec really wants for nothing and is a remarkable upgrade at the price point. Its better looking and should ride better IMO too.

2. Every time I see the 'new' model I just know it will irk me that I cheaped out just to save about £20 a week.
And having to listen to and justify the inevitable colleagues comments 'Why did you buy the old model' also would irritate me :)

3. Better fuel economy. I get a fixed rate per mile to begin with from my employer.
Every little profit offsets the extra monthly cost dont forget.

But it's not all about price. For me anyhow.
I spend long days in my car for work. Might as well enjoy it.

I meant to say that the only engine available with a manual box is the E220, it is available in auto as an option (as you already know).

No- the 220 is the only engine that is available with a manual box, SE or Sport. All others are auto only.

The prices are so convincing that I'm almost wondering why I should keep my current (old) car. I can currently get £7k for my C220, but this won't last for long. Although it's been a reliable car I would be annoyed if something big went wrong and I had to fork out a huge some. I would say my current car is still depreciating at £2k per year, plus the costs of tax and inevitable repairs. I calculate it's only another £1350 per year for a new E250, over the next couple of years.

Who needs salesmen, I can do the job for them LOL.

I think a lot of the decision is down to how long you think you are going to want to keep your car. I was mulling these lease deals over and mostly they make sense rather than buying second hand.

However, i picked a 2nd hand 2010 e class and am planning on having it 5 or 6 years (paid off in 3), so for me taking a lease wouldn't have been so amazing

taking into account depreciation of the 09 E350 i would reckon you would loose £10k over a three year period, allowing for financing and deposit i reckon the monthly cost would be £375.

The new E250 as long as you kept below 10,000 miles per year and looked after it would cost £345/month.

Makes more sense to take the new car option to me.
